GREENBELT, Md. -- Metro Transit Police have closed the Greenbelt Metro Station after a person on a Green Line train said he had explosives in a bag.

Metro officials said a customer on a train asked another rider if a suitcase that was on the train was his, and the man responded by saying the bag was his and that it had explosives in it.

The passenger got off at the College Park Station and advised the station manager what had happened. The train continued to Greenbelt, where it was stopped.

The man who said he had explosives in his bag was taken into custody. He told police that he had been joking.

The station has been shut down until further notice while the incident is being investigated. Shuttle buses have been sent to the station to handle passengers.

All trains are turning around at College Park.

Officials said there has been minimal impact so far. Copyright 2006 by nbc4.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

What ever happened to ask a stupid question, you'll get a stupid answer? These people are reacting like they found a 2nd grader with a plastic fork.

Having ridden Metro through Pentagon station on 9/12/2001, I can tell you that's no joke at all. He's lucky the other guy didn't call out the people's militia and have him stomped into the floor.

A "practical joker" deserves applause for his wit according to its quality.
Bastinado is about right.
For exceptional wit one might grant keelhauling.
But staking him out on an anthill should be reserved for the very wittiest.

"He told police that he had been joking."

That's going to go over like a fart in church, pal. You've got a world of hurt about to come down on you. Oh wait; this is The People's Republik of Maryland, isn't it? Not to worry. Just tell them you're a muslim convert, an oppressed minority and are mentally-unstable, and you're home free. Like the SF muslim SUV driver...

(((sigh)))

"These people are reacting like they found a 2nd grader with a plastic fork."

This is what you can expect when you put people with a second grade education, or worse yet, second grade thinking ability, in charge of security.

Whoever told the authorities what the man said is a dope. The smart thing would have been to toss the man's luggage off the train.
