From what I have read, this was a pre-meditated murder, with a selected victim and designated look-outs, as well as an elaborate cover-up afterwards.
If the death penalty is to have any meaning, it should apply here, assuming they are found guilty. And I think it should be carried out by firing squad in the town square where it happened.
Certainly if I were part of the same unit as these men, I'd see it as an opportunity to erase the shame they had brought on their comrades.

What stories have you read that state what you claim? I have not seen this anywhere myself. If you can provide links to show this that would be helpful or if you are just writing without factual evidence soldiers reputations are being tarnished.
