NEW YORK — Just over half of Americans believe Sen. Hillary Clinton is prepared to be the first female president of the United States, according to a new FOX News poll. In addition, Clinton is the preferred choice of Democratic voters for their party’s 2008 presidential nominee; on the Republican side, former NY Mayor Rudy Giuliani barely edges out Ariz. Sen. John McCain for frontrunner billing.
Opinion Dynamics Corporation conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from August 29 to August 30. The poll has a 3-point error margin.
A slim 51-percent majority of voters believes Clinton is prepared to be the first woman president, though a large minority disagrees (43 percent). There are essentially no gender differences, as about the same number of men (49 percent) and women (52 percent) think Clinton is ready.
On the political side, Democrats (75 percent) are three times as likely as Republicans (24 percent), and significantly more likely than independents (50 percent) to think Clinton is prepared for a promotion.
"It is clear that Senator Clinton remains a deeply polarizing figure," comments Opinion Dynamics Chairman John Gorman. "While half the country seems prepared to give her a chance, nearly as many won’t consider her. If she’s in the race in 2008 we can look forward to yet another late night finish, with all the acrimony, suspicion and bitterness that the last two elections have produced."
The poll finds that Clinton far outdistances the other Democrats for the party’s nomination. She receives the backing of 32 percent of self-identified Democrats, down from 43 percent earlier this year (March 14-15).

It may persuade some of the suggestible that Hillarrhea!® is the inexorable Wave of the Future and that they are obliged to get on board, but I suspect it will also mobilize an equal number against her.
I go back in politics to Goldwater, and I have never seen anyone with such high negatives- she irritates an amazingly wide spectrum of people.

The date, sometime before summer 1998. Imagine you are politically hyper-active, power hungry, and love the life style afforded the highest office in the land. You realize it will all end in 2.5 years, at which point you will be pushed to the side. This just won't do. You are HRClinton, what's your next step?
You have all your friends in the media begging you to run, but you have never held office, any office, at any level. You aren't stupid and know you'd never make it. Therefore, you will have to hold some high level office in 2000. So that rules out running for POTUS in 2000. 2004 would also be out since you'd only be a freshman. You know you'll have to serve one successful term without controversy and without pissing off too many people.
This leaves you with 2008 and 2012. 2012 would be out since you'd be getting even longer in the tooth and the shine would be too far off the apple (being as nice as possible here) to sell. Therefore, 2008 it is.
No problem. If a democrat wins in 2000, he'd run again in 2004. If he wins in 2004, his running mate would be tossed to the 2nd seat again in 2008, if you put your hat in the ring. If he loses in 2004, you're set for an uncontested shot at 2008 top slot.
Only a democrat loss in 2000 causes problems, because you'd have to insure a democrat loss in 2004. This could be accomplished after the DNC in July 2004 by reduced or unflattering news coverage. Potentially leaking of damaging information (which you have, of course) would also insure a democrat loss in 2004.
So... you have it all set. You figure it's a no brainer. You only have to pick the type of high level office you want. This leaves governor, senate, or congress. Congress doesn't yield enough power. Governor's do a lot of work, and run the higher risk of pissing people off. That leaves the Senate. Powerful, low risk, most people don't even know their senators. Therefore, senator clinton it is. Next question, which state? Has to be a big, powerful state with the possibility of getting in. The 4 most powerful states would be (in no particular order): Texas, California, New York, and Florida. Texas and Florida are off the ticket right away. California is unlikely, and that leaves New York. No problem.
So the only thing you need to do is buy a house in New York.
Then the unthinkable. Someone has the gaul to actually suggest they want to run for the same seat! YOUR seat! This person can't just be dismissed, unlike the others. This one is a democrat! And he's well respected by democrats AND republicans! Whoa! This isn't good. He's well liked by all demographics. He has actually had a successful business in New York and the people genuinely like him. Worse still, the media loves him... they swoon all over him!
This cannot be allowed to stop *US*, the co-presidents! How dare he?!

Yes, we have all heard the term 'arkan-cide'.. and you've deflected all the stories in the passed, what's one more? This guy even flies a personal airplane (what was he thinking?!). No problem.

The outrage or shock you may be feeling is due to the subconscious realization of just how well that all fits.
You are not alone. I have seen people jump up from a table upon hearing the name. Shock and disbelief in their eyes... from it 'clicking' into place.
I don't trust Dick Morris. I suspect he's a stealth promoter for Hillary. One red flag is that he repeats the nonsense that Bill is responsible for the successful welfare reform which really came from a three-year running battle led by Newt.
On the other hand, 59% of Americans say they would get a Drano enema before voting for Hillary...
I am prepared to be a Multi-Millionaire, doesn't mean I ever will be. And if you asked those around me, 90+ percent would agree that I am prepared. It's all in the wording..
Eligibility for US President: a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.
To recap: Natural born citizen, at least thirty-five years of age, and having resided within the United States fourteen years.
And probably in terms of what is meant by "qualified", Herself has met these very basic requirements.
Does Herself have the gumption to actually carry out the duties of the office? Herself can certainly campaign for the job, but that is a very different skill set than governing.
Eligible and capable are not at all the same thing.

to be clear - Morris has said that specifically young unmarried women, who typically have a low turnout and are as such represented in samples - would turn out in statistically higher numbers to vote for her, because of the "chic" idea of electing the first woman president.
Morris is correct about that specific point.
It is an inane question so the results are meaningless.
I'm not too sure Hillary is going to run. She's definitely doing a so-called "Listening Tour" for 2008. She's testing her popularity.
