Actually, it looks more like Paul Shaffer, having a flasher outing from the Letterman show.

I think the Hunter Thompson looking guy is Jim Carvin, he was on 60 Minutes during the Nagin interview, he is the anti Bob Shrum as he has been political advisor to every winning mayor in the Big Easy since 1969 — including Nagin.
