CNN `Live From...' the ladies room
yahoo! ^ | 30-Aug-2006 | FRAZIER MOORE

NEW YORK - Kyra Phillips, anchor of CNN's "Live From...," unwittingly upstaged President Bush's speech in New Orleans with on-the-air analysis of her husband and the marriage of her brother — all live from a CNN ladies room.

Unaware that her wireless microphone was "live" during her break, Phillips could be heard overriding Bush's prepared address Tuesday as he was seen marking the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The Atlanta-based Phillips, in conversation with an unidentified woman in an echoey room, dismissed most men with a vulgar term, but called herself "very lucky in that regard. My husband is handsome and he is genuinely a loving — you know, no ego — you know what I'm saying? Just a really passionate, compassionate, great, great human being. And they exist. They do exist. They're hard to find. Yup. But they are out there."

A few moments later, she observed that "brothers have to be, you know, protective. Except for mine. I've got to be protective of him."

Why? "His wife is just a control freak."

At that point, another voice cut in: "Kyra."

"Yeah, baby?" replied Phillips on hearing her name.

"Your mike is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air."

CNN anchor Daryn Kagan, looking flustered, then broke into the telecast with a recap of what Bush had been saying.

Phillips later apologized to viewers "for an issue we had with our mikes" and "for a little bit of an interruption there during the president."

CNN issued its own official statement, explaining the network had "experienced audio difficulties during the president's speech today in New Orleans. We apologize to our viewers and the president for the disruption."

The network also apologized to the White House.

I'm amused that the control room couldn't figure out how to turn her sound off, and someone had to tell her to turn her microphone off because she was going over the air.

I thought that was what they had a control room for.

"in an echoey room"

Can't bring themselves to admit she was on the toilet? Her zipper is audible.

"Your mike is on. Turn it off. It's been on the air."

I don't know much about how the control room works, but it seems to me that it's the responsibility of someone in the control room to decide what goes out over the air.

It shouldn't matter if Bozo's mike is on or not, the signal should be switched off at the control panel.

Finally they get a taste of their own Cheney "Big Time" off-mike gotcha tactics.

The talking head controls the input that goes out over the air?

don't they have producers and directors and a control room and a crew (any one of which could pull the plug on her mic)

I think the control room dudes wanted to eavesdrop on what was being said in the ladies room.

CNN has moved on from broadcasting from the bathroom to broadcasting car chases. LOL......not sure if that's an upwardly move or not.

Didn't one of Rush's parodies of the Tom Daschel Radio Show have him broadcasting at a bathroom break?

They probably all hate Bush so much that they just turn down the sound whenever he's speaking.

Aha! I think you've hit the nail on the head. The news story is now about their screwup, instead of whatever the President was saying.

Writing the history of our time in song.

MIDI - WALK RIGHT IN --- (cut and paste into your browser and get the music)
http://members.aol.com/katydidit/vplaces/midilink.htm

She's gonna walk right in...she'll sit right down...Kyra's gonna take a pee
She's gonna walk right in...she's on the air...it's as funny as can be

Everybody's flocking to the clip for some mocking...Kyra Phillips made history
She's gonna walk right in...she'll sit right down...Kyra's gonna take a pee

Walk right in...she'll sit right down...her sister-in-law she will rip
Walk right in...she's on the air...come on, Kyra, get a grip

Everybody's flocking to the clip for some mocking...Kyra Phillips made history
Walk right in...she'll sit right down...Kyra's gonna take a pee

Walk right in...she'll sit right down...she says her man's really great
She's gonna walk right in...she's on the air...CNN, what is her fate?

Everybody's flocking to the clip for some mocking...Kyra Phillips made history
Walk right in...she'll sit right down...Kyra's gonna take a pee

Walk right in...she'll sit right down...I could hear a zipper sound
Walk right in...she's on the air...her embarrassment's profound

Everybody's flocking to the clip for some mocking...Kyra Phillips made history
Walk right in...she'll sit right down...Kyra's gonna take a pee
While Bush speaks she talks and she goes pee

Now that this is such a big story, could CNN please do a follow-up interview with Kyra's sister-in-law?

I might actually tune in for that.
