CALGARY -- Two mysterious deaths discovered in as many days in Calgary have left the city's homicide detectives scrambling for answers.
On Sunday morning, a man was tossed from a car in the heart of downtown, dying just before or just after.
Two men were arrested later that day, but both were released without charges yesterday morning after being questioned as "persons of interest" in the homicide investigation, police said, and supplying information about the vehicle used in the incident.
"We obtained the information we needed and they were sent on their way," Detective John Dooks said. A spokeswoman later added that the investigation is "refocusing in a different direction."
The victim has not been identified, but police described him as an adult Caucasian, 20 to 25 years old, of average build and with several tattoos. The vehicle from which he was thrown is a 1997 light-coloured Cadillac DeVille, but police are still looking for the occupants.
An autopsy was being performed.
Less than 24 hours later, police made another gruesome discovery after a resident of a suburb in the city's northwest phoned to complain about an unfamiliar car parked on a side street. When police arrived, they found a body.
"Somebody in the community called the police about this suspicious vehicle and then this was discovered," said Duty Inspector Kevan Stuart.
He would not say whether the body was found in the trunk, but he did say the initial complaint was about a vehicle, not a body. The corpse had been in the sedan for a number of days, during a streak of hot weather.
Police had few answers in this case yesterday, which was being called a "suspicious death."
The age and race of the victim has not yet been established, and police were still working to determine whether he owned the vehicle in which he was found.
Duty Insp. Stuart said there is no indication the suspicious death is linked to gang activity.
