Senator Charles Schumer is warning that the aging U.N. headquarters is a "death trap" waiting to happen.
Schumer says the building has fallen into disrepair after 50 years. He's urging U.N. officials – including Secretary General Kofi Annan – to jump-start renovations.
The senator says the building lacks a sprinkler system and has aging steam pipes that could explode. Schumer says despite the deteriorating conditions, nothing has been done.
"While the blue-green windows of the Secretariat building glisten on the outside, on the inside of the building, things are crumbling. These problems are not new. The U.N. has known about them since the mid-nineties, yet to this day no work has begun and the money has not been allocated.
Schumer wants U.N. officials to finalize the multi-million dollar renovation plan when they're back in session next week.
The U.N. has not yet responded to Schumer's call.

I think the UN needs to move into whole new building... on some other continent.
I wonder who would be called upon to pay the bill for these "renovations".
Didn't 'The Donald' (Trump) say he could do this under budget (a fraction of the estimated cost) and on time, if only they (whoever they is) would LET the contract to him.
I think Darfur would be a wonderfull location with a veiw of UN inaction.

Or, abolish the UN Con-mission on Human Rights, that org. is probably among the most worthless (it's a tough call between that and any others). That should cover new carpets, drapes, etc.
Or better yet, MOVE THE HELL OUT OF MY COUNTRY TO A COUNTRY THAT YOU DON'T HATE. Should be plenty out there that would give you a deal on new digs. (Tip to prospective countries - don't sign any long term leases with the Kofi or the UN).
I always thought the sub-basement in the Hague would be perfect.

I'm not an envirnomentalist, but I couldn't do that to the East River. And NYC Harbor has enough rotting bodies in it.
I think the 911 Memorial should be built on the leveled, former property of the UN. Terrorism is exactly the kind of thing the UN was formed to prevent, and has instead turned into a multi-billion dollar business.
We should rebuild the Trade Towers exactly where they were before, except higher and topped with extended middle fingers.
