Feds Say New Orleans Is Storm-Ready

Sunday August 27, 2006 6:46 PM

By JOHN HEILPRIN

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal emergency officials claim New Orleans levee system is ready for another major hurricane, despite the less-optimistic views of other political leaders and engineers.

``I think we're in good shape,'' Don Powell, the Bush administration's coordinator of Gulf Coast rebuilding, said Sunday. ``There's no question in my mind, we're ready.''

The levees failed after Hurricane Katrina, a Category 4 storm, roared ashore a year ago, flooding the city of New Orleans. The levees were built to withstand a Category 3 storm; the highest level is a Category 5.

Whether the city is ready or not could be tested soon by Hurricane Ernesto, the first of the Atlantic season, with winds of 75 mph that could grow into a Category 3 hurricane by Thursday. It's uncertain where Ernesto could hit land.

``We are ready for a hurricane regardless of where it's going to hit,'' said David Paulison, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which says it repaired and reinforced 220 miles of levee walls, has been closely monitoring the storm, which could hit soon after the anniversary of Katrina.

``I believe that the levees are ready for hurricane season,'' Powell said.'' ``The levees are back to where they were pre-Katrina, and they're on their way to being the best, better and stronger then they have ever been.''

Paulison and Powell are fools for saying what is quoted above.

If there's any such thing as "tempting fate," Mr. Powell's false bravado is going to suck Ernesto right into New Orleans like a vacuum.

Yeah, seriously. Very convenient timing on this statement, coming on the heels of the forecast showing Ernesto headed further east.

Memo to Ray Nagin:

Texas is already full of your welfare-laden masses. Those that want to become productive parts of the communities they are in are welcome; the rest we're sending back.

Please note that Texas will no longer be accepting refugees from NOLA. Please contact the states of MA or CA.

As I remember it the newsman on the ground claimed NO dodged the bullet as Katrina turned east. Now it reads that they took a direct it and can take another even better. Whatever the case I'm happy to be well North above sea level.

Yeah I do feel sad about that. I migrated from Dallas where I was born to New Orleans. I love both states and I do feel bad that you got our dregs and welfare ho's.

I have a suggestion. Pay them to move to mexico. We dont want nor need them.
