Israel is carefully watching the world's reaction to Iran's continued refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, with some high-level officials arguing it is now clear that when it comes to stopping Iran, Israel "may have to go it alone," The Jerusalem Post has learned.

One senior source said on Tuesday that Iran "flipped the world the bird" by not responding positively to the Western incentive plan to stop uranium enrichment. He expressed frustration that the Russians and Chinese were already saying that Iran's offer of a "new formula" and willingness to enter "serious negotiations" was an opening to keep on talking.

"The Iranians know the world will do nothing," he said. "This is similar to the world's attempts to appease Hitler in the 1930s - they are trying to feed the beast."

Olmert doesn't have the will or the Cabinet to pull that off right now. If elections are called, Iran will take notice.

After seeing the debacle in Lebanon by Israel, I am sorry to say, that as long as omlette is president/premier Israel will not have the will...they might not even have the logistics...

I am also afraid that with the pounding that Bush has gotten over the last 6.5 years by the MSM and dems, the USA will do nothing...

Get used to an Iran with nuclear weapons...it is inevitable...

And to Gore:

You thought global warming is destroying your precious environment, you wait and see what 100 megatons does to the environment...

The world will sit idly by, it seems. They say they like the US and Israel when we're the victims - 9/11 or after the Holocaust. But they really just want us to be mindless Liberal nebbishes bent on the stupid suicide policies of Kerry and Chirac. The US and Israel will have to decide whether being liked by people who do not respect us is as important as national survival. It's that simple.

100%

The world loves to erect monuments, museums and vigils for 911 + Holocaust victims...etc....BUT, if it were preventable by going to WAR properly (not PC style), wouldn't this save lives????? in the long run...Just as USA did to end WWII????

It will also be brief. Let's hope we don't get to that point.

Israel will have to do whatever is necessary to destroy Iran's capability to produce a nuclear bomb.

( No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo!)

. Israeli officials said France has consistently advocated a firm position with Iran regarding the nuclear issue.

Oh sure...France? firm position? like leading the UN 1701 International Force in Lebanon with 200 soldiers? What a joke to rely on France for anything but nothing.

One needs ballistic, not cruise, misslies, against their newer SAM systems.

If I were Ahmadinejad, and the Israelis called elections, I'd piss my pants. It would only be a matter of time...

Israel would be in a far better position to go it alone if it had done what it was supposed to do in Lebanon. First, Hezbollah would have been destroyed as an effective threat to Israel. Second, and more importantly, Syria would likely have gotten into the fight - and would have been crushed. Then Israel would have been able to use newly acquired bases in eastern Syria from which to launch strikes and recover their aircraft. Now it'll be much tougher.

FoOlmert must go, along with the rest of his government. You cannot run an effective war with people like him near the reins of power, and war is exactly what Israel faces for a long time with its Moslem neighbors (thanks in no small part to FoOlmert's wasting of the deterrent capacity of the IDF).

That is a good point. Israel is not a credible threat under Olmert.

Israel is carefully watching the world's reaction...Israel "may have to go it alone,"

Anybody else see the irony of these two back to back sentences ?

How can Israel both 1) care about the world's reaction and 2) go it alone ?

In 25 years, Israel has changed, as has the USA.
