Former Wasilla mayor Sarah Palin knocked embattled incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski out of office in the Republican primary race for governor Tuesday, setting the stage for a general election showdown with former two-term Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles and for a potential shake-up in her own party.

Murkowski actually finished a distant third.
Dangit! Your headline had me thinking Bawney Fwank had decided to retire to Fire Island.
Why was Murkowski embattled? In other words, why did he lose the primary?
Where does one start. He would not have had this problem if Sarah was U.S. Senator.
Yes a very distant third.
He got 18% of the R vote. Binkley got 30%. Palin got 51%.
But it isn't because he is a RINO or anything, is it? It is more personal conduct than bad policies? I know he drew lots of flack for appointing his daughter to the Senate, but she then won an election in her own right.
He screwed up. Nepotism is an ugly thing.
He got 18% of the R vote. Binkley got 30%. Palin got 51%.
Well, duh! But my question is why he came in third among Republicans even though he is the incumbent governor? I know about him appointing his daughter to the Senate (she subsequently won election in her own right). I know about the plane. What else?
Natural gas. That is the $20 billion issue.
The airplane is a non-issue. But the airplane must be sold before Nov if Palin is to have a chance.
The BP thing? Okay, now we are getting somewhere. But is the Alaska state government really responsible for how BP maintains (or fails to maintain) the pipeline?
Dude, you ain't kidding.
Maybe this the start of a trend. Both Palin and Irey are conservative 40-something moms who are "smoking hot."
I hope so!
It's the same reason that Jeb Bush is sitting out 2008. Unless you live in Massachusetts, nobody wants a political dynasty. Even though Lisa Murkowski won in her own right two years ago, that kind of high-handed appointment reeks of arrogance and hubris. If I lived in Alaska, I would have voted against him.
The Natural Gas Pipeline. There is Frank's proposal and there is the Port Authority proposal the rest of the politicos want. That divides the R Party, and that is the major issue.
Frank tried to smear Palin but the mud washed off before election day. The real clincher for me was when the Republican attorney tried to make Palin supporters remove their Palin tee shirts at the annual Republican picnic. He pushed a 70 year old Palin supported in the process. He should have not done that. That one act cost lots of votes.
Frank used the state jet to fly him to get his yacht. Said it was official business. Oh and using the state jet for campaign trips.
The airplane is a big issue.
