"But do you really want the anti-illegal immigration efforts seen as targeting children? Don't get me wrong, I think they should all be thrown out. But appearances matter, and with the MSM so capable of making us out to be the bad guys, is it so smart to give them this ammunition?"

The MSM never misses an opportunity to make us out to be the "bad guys".

The Latino movement is counting on compassion "for the children", and we can't be blackmailed.

Have we established these kids would be going back to a Nation where they will be treated inhumanely? I don't think so...

Granted, they won't have the luxuries our children enjoy, but that's not my problem.

BTW, our gov't didn't seem to mind sending Elian back to Cuba, where necessities such as toothpaste and soap are strictly rationed..

If their parents want to take them with them upon their deportation, they should be able to do so provided they forfeit the childs US citizenship

Or do as the Saudi and Japanese laws are......when they reach the age of 21, they can decide which citizenship they want, and if they can pass the test they can become a legal citizen

AND in a good way!
By showing some spine - maybe our President could take a hint!

" If their parents want to take them with them upon their deportation, they should be able to do so provided they forfeit the childs US citizenship. See, there is always a compassionate solution."

And an excellent one, I might add!

We're one of the very very few nations that permit "Anchor babies," and even encourage it by paying for the births in our hospitals: that has GOT to stop!

"According to the Supreme Court."

Ah, that would be the same august body that ruled slavery was legal?

My point (since I seem to have to make it in a not very subtle fashion) is that Supreme Court decisions, like anything else of a political nature, are subject to change.

But this posting was not about providing or withholding benefits to the children of wetbacks:
it was about the fact that one Texas city at least has shown some backbone, and has proposed a host of remedies - *one* of which some have quibbled over.

I question whether that really is the law or whether it is just the way it has been applied.

It is a gray area, but I believe congress has the authority to clarify it with legislation. It's black and white to me, children of illegal aliens are not citizens. But what I think is irrelevant, and the courts as they are now constituted are going to err on the side of the illegals.

Again, congress needs to act.

Children of illegal aliens who are born in the U.S. are not here illegally

Yes they are.

"Every Person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons."
Senator Jacob Howard, co-author of the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, 1866.

Slavery was not only legal, it was constitutionally protected. Slavery was outlawed by constitutional amendment.

My point (since I seem to have to make it in a not very subtle fashion) is that Supreme Court decisions, like anything else of a political nature, are subject to change.

Agreed. But the court and it's rulings have to be changed--the change has to happen first.

I agree with, support, and encourage Farmers Branch and all other local municipalities in their efforts to combat illegal immigration and all of its' detrimental effects. My one reservation is the tactic of specifically targeting children. I see this as a loser on the P.R. side of the battle, and that is VERY important. Whether you like it or not, appearances matter, and our opponents, including the MSM, will miss no opportunity to smear and slime those of us who simply want immigration laws and borders enforced.

Fixed it for you. Don't imply courage or principals to civilian government entities when something more self serving is available. That way you get to be right more often.

If you are going to require landlords and employers to enforce emigration laws, I propose requiring every citizen spend 80 hours a month patrolling the border.

It's only fair. You can't force one group of citizens to work for the government for free while everyone else gets to sit on their hands.

I'll step back from my statement that the supreme court actually has ruled on this--I don't know. I was generalizing, based on the current leanings of the federal courts, and I am aware of no decisions by SCOTUS that specifically said that children of illegals are NOT citizens. I don't think that they are, but what I think doesn't matter and unfortunately the courts will have to decide.

I believe congress has both the authority and duty to clarify this with legislation, however, and congress needs to grow some testicular fortitude and act.

""Appearances" yadda yadda...

You're not really from around here, are you?"

lol.... You get the Grinch who stole Christmas award for this week. Better be careful though. In this "It's for the children" society where the little monsters are treated like porcelain figurines, talk like yours could get you crucified. Might want to check your front yard to see if the mob with torches has gathered yet!

How about I go ahead and dissagree with you, and get that out of the way...

Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights will get you a left...

"Regardless" of the law, it is still illegal to enter this country without jumping through the hoops to do so legally...

Lots of people do it correctly and within the law every year...

With what you are saying, you'd rather protect a program that supports children who's family is here illegally taking advantage of a "program" that makes their life easier, therefore why should they (children of illegal aliens) be given a pass?

Even though I know its not the kids fault...There parents are to blame, and should be taken care of when they are caught...

Believe it or not...Millions of kids are born around the world we know, grow up, live fruitful lives in countries legally their entire lives, and are happy to do so...Without ever having more than possibly a passing thought about coming to this country to do the same thing...

So perpetuating the cycle of illegality "regardless" of age, gender, original nationality is ok in your book?

The people who come into this country illegally are selfish, the majority of them exploit this country to the greatest extent they can possibly get away with...And many do so with the support of those who wish to exploit them for various causes (both politically and economically)...

So If I understand you correctly, you actually want to give people who break our laws and soverienty "regardless" of the circumstances, a pass, amnesty, just because you don't want to make things hard on the children of these lawbreakers?

Seems to me things are hard on them already (thanks to their parents who have broken our laws), and we (Legal citizens) have not even done anything about it yet???

I have a few rental properties. I would NEVER discriminate against a Hispanic. I'll accept ALL applicants, give everyone a fair opportunity and then choose the person who I know is legal and offer explanations to no one.....
