ITALY: MUSLIM ANTI-ISRAEL NEWSPAPER AD SPARKS CONTROVERSY

Rome, 21 August (AKI) - An ad comparing Israel's actions in Lebanon and in the Palestinian territorties with Nazi atrocities during World War II placed by one of Italy's Muslim associations in several regional dailies has divided Muslim leaders. It has also provoked condemnation from politicians across the political spectrum and from the Jewish community. The ads were placed by the Union of Islamic Communities in Italy Association (UCOII) which is represented on a government-appointed advisory body on Islamic affairs, the Consulta Islamica.

Centre-right politicians have backed calls by the Union of Jewish Communities' president, Renzo Gattegna, for the government to review the UCOII's membership of the Consulta.

UCOII president Mohamed Nour Dachan has defended the decision to run the ad, which likens Israel's military action against Arabs in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories to the Nazi persecution of the Jews. The reason that dailies in Milan, Bologna and Florence had on Saturday published the ad - prepared after the Israeli military in July killed 60 cilivians including 37 children in airstrikes on the southern Lebanese village of Qana - was that the papers did not have space to do so until then, Dachan said.

Even though hostilities between Israel and guerrillas from the militant Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah officially ceased last week following a United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 - "the ad was still pertinent," Dachan stated. "Israel is continuing to carry out attacks and to violate the ceasefire, " he said.

"People who are offended [by the ad] should instead take umbrage at the sacrifice of human life... we have merely listed 73 massacres carried out by Israel, " Dachan said. His remarks were echoed by UCOII secretary, Hamza Picardo: "We are dealing with disproportionate reactions, as always occur when Israeli policy is criticised," Piccardo said.

These numbers were exploded as lies weeks ago.

It is rapidly coming to a point where Muslims in the west will be forced to choose between rationality and exile.

I don't suppose the ad also mentioned the war crimes committed by Hiz, such as launching attacks from civilian areas in the hopes that Israeli counter-attacks would kill civilians for propaganda purposes.

They will choose jihad and claim the upper hand. The one universally agreed upon "trigger" for physical holy war is the supression/prohibition on Islam in a territory.

They are being stupid and forcing their hand before they are strong enough.

Having groups like UCOII (or CAIR) on government advisory boards is like having NAMBLA appointed to a board on child sexual abuse.

Turkey and Egypt were Christian? You mean there once existed religious freedom?

You mean the atrocities the Muzzies say are a myth? They need to get their story straight.
