Two armed men spotted near Kakrapar atomic plant

HindustanTimes.com

Ahmedabad, August 22, 2006

A security alarm was raised in and around the Kakrapar atomic power plant near Surat on Tuesday afternoon when the local people reported seeing two armed men near the nuclear installation, officials said.

Personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) who guard the installation and the local police have launched combing operations, officials said.

According to CISF public relations officer Wartul Singh, the two armed men were spotted in the villages that skirt the atomic centre. "There was no breach of the inner perimeter," he asserted.

Singh said the 1.6 km inner circle of the atomic centre was guarded by commandos and thus very safe.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a statement issued in New Delhi, said there was no threat to the atomic installation.

Tuesday, August 22, 2006 (Surat):

Two armed men have been spotted in the vicinity of the Kakrapar Atomic Energy Centre near surat.

The men reportedly entered the 1.6 kilometer high security exclusive zone between 3:00-4:00 pm today.

The report is based on information by local villagers living near the station.

The police and the CISF have launched joint combing operations and the whole area has been cordoned off.

Exclusive zone

Commandos took up positions inside the control room for the reactors while CISF troops combed the 1.6-km "exclusive zone" between the Kakrapar station's outer fence and an inner barrier around the nuclear plants."

Two armed men were seen moving suspiciously near an atomic power plant in India.

Police in India are on the hunt for two armed men who were seen moving near an atomic power plant. Local villagers made the report after they saw something suspicious.

The search was being carried out near the Kakrapar nuclear power plant in Surat district, about 240 km south of Ahmedabad.

India security officials said, "We got information from villagers that two armed men were seen in the exclusive zone outside the plant area.

News agencies are reporting that a special paramilitary force was brought in after the armed pair were spotted near the plant.

Security agencies had received warnings earlier this month about possible militant attacks on power plants, and stepped up security ahead of independence day celebrations on August 15.

The power plant has two units, each with a capacity of 220 megawatts, which went into operation between 1993 and 1995.

Define 'the worst'. If you mean cause a meltdown, it's hard to say since the plant isn't an American plant. Contrary to popular belief, nuke plant security in the US is extremely tight; just ask anyone who's been to a nuke plant. If this were an American facility, armed men would never have made it to the front door before being killed. I would also imagine American plants have some pretty serious computer security; I doubt just anyone could start pushing buttons to cause a meltdown and even if they could, American plants have lots of automated failsafes to prevent such a thing.

Unfortunately, this isn't an American nuke plant. It's Indian. I don't know anything about India's nuke plant security, so it's hard to say.
