Poll Results Show Allen Losing Ground (Allen 48%, Webb 45%)
WUSA-TV/SurveyUSA ^ | 8/21/06

Posted on 08/21/2006 3:04:55 PM PDT by DallasJ7

In an election for the United States Senate in Virginia today, 8/21/06, incumbent Republican George Allen edges Democrat challenger James Webb 48% to 45%, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for W*USA-TV in Washington, DC.

Since an identical SurveyUSA poll released 6/28/06, Allen has lost 8 points and Webb has gained 8 points. Allen's lead has shrunk from 19 points to 3 points.

Interviewing for this poll began 8/18/06, one week after Allen singled out a Webb campaign worker at an Allen rally. Allen has lost support across all demographic groups, but in particular, among younger voters. He has gone from Plus 23 to Minus 17, a swing of 40 points. In Southeastern VA, Allen has gone from a 2:1 lead to a tie, a 31-point swing.

Those who support Ballot Question 1, defining marriage in Virginia as between one man and one woman, vote for Allen by 39 points. Those who oppose Question 1 vote for Webb by 64 points. The election is in 11 weeks, on 11/7/06.

The Republicans have a 10-seat majority in the U.S. Senate. Allen's seat had been considered safely Republican, and Allen himself had been widely considered to be a Republican candidate for President of the United States in 2008.

Marriage Amendment Passes 2:1. In an election in Virginia today, 8/21/06, Question 1, which amends the Virginia Bill of Rights to define marriage in Virginia as between one man and one woman, passes with 65% "Yes" to 34% "No", according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for W*USA-TV Washington DC. Republicans support the Amendment 8:1. Democrats oppose the Amendment 5:4. Independents support it 3:2. 92% of Conservatives vote "Yes." 29% of Liberals vote "Yes." Those who approve of President Bush's job performance support the Amendment 9:1. Those who disapprove of Bush oppose the Amendment. The Amendment is supported by 89% of Allen voters but by only 39% of Webb voters.

The following is the result of what 567 "likely voters" said they would vote:

If the election for United States Senator were today, and you were standing in the voting booth right now, who would you vote for? Republican George Allen? Democrat Jim Webb? Independent Green Gail Parker Or some other candidate?

48% Allen (R)

45% Webb (D)

2% Parker (IG)

5% Undecided

Question 1 amends the Virginia Bill of Rights to say the following: that only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions. In an election today, would you vote yes or no on Question 1?

65% Yes

34% No

1% Undecided

Lets remember now, most of the allen haters on this forum claim he's dead unless he pulls out like a 20 point upset. They forget he won the first time 52-48, virginia is not utah.

I sure hope we don't lose the Senate over Allen's big mouth.

Any poll that shows Democrats against marriage by a 5:1 margin probably is not correctly structured.

BS ~ calling somebody "Mr. Mohawk" has nothing whatsoever to do with "white person" ~ but it does have a lot to do with the ability and willingness of leftwingnuts to redefine words to suit themselves ~ and, to take feigned offense suitible for use by their running dog lackeys in the press.

There are numerous places on the internet where you and others can bother to learn Mingo, or non-confederation Iriquois ~ it will also enhance your understanding of "The Simpsons".

I'd suggest you get busy, and like the good Conservative you appear to believe you are, LEARN Iriquois. Best place to go are sites dedicated to teaching Mingo.

Webb was busy proving to his Dem backer sthat he was a good little antisemitic fascist when he said those things.

Hit piece journalism! Senator George Allen is still a good front-runner and a good candidate.

Well, some of us who at least appear to believe we are good conservatives may be a little dense.

What, exactly, does a Native American Indian tribe language have to do with the Allen gaffe that relates to a North African racial slur against an American of subcontinental Indian extraction? I'm thoroughly lost.

Are you nuts? This is one dippy poll which means little. How soon we forget the poll job the Rats did to us two years ago. They had everyone believing they were winning everywhere even the WH. Get real, keep the faith and don't sell your life on these polls.

It's much more likely George Allen and his staffers know something of athentic Americana than of remote and obscure North African name-calling.

I suggest you catch up with me and George ~ redeem your Conservative credentials.

Besides the Democratic campaign staffer in the target hairs here is of Indian Indian heritage, and he really doesn't look like all that much of a minority ~ more like a heavily tanned Aryan, eh!

They got a billion more of 'em too!

Hi ED. How do we know how Sen. Allen would spell it?
Macaca
or
Makaka
or
Makacka
or
Mawkaka
or
Mawkawka
or
Maokaka
or
Maockaka
or....

Get my drift? Only the dims and media are giving us the spelling as macaca and after a few days came up with the definition.

I wasn't talking about the poll, I was talking about his "macaca" comment, it shows he has a flaw that is going to spell big trouble in a national race. Whether the flaw is talk-before-thinking or something else, I can't say for sure, but foot-in-mouth syndrome does not play well on TV.

muayiyah ... George Allen would be personally and intimately familiar with remote and obscure North African name-calling, given that his mother was born and raised in Tunisia.

I have been a huge George Allen fan since attending the GOP convention in Richmond when he won the nomination to run for Governor. My daughter whose absentee ballot was returned to her out-of-state college in '00 flew home a few weeks before the election specifically so she could absentee vote for George Allen. (she could have cared less about George Bush winning) I have worked for GOP candidates in every election in Virginia (which is yearly) for a few decades now ... I really don't think you have to worry about my getting on board, much less catching up with you.

We have to be honest and admit when our candidate makes a real boner of a mistake .... a Democrat could have said the same damned thing and no one, but no one, would care. Republicans can't afford to be that careless. George Allen is too good a candidate and too good a politician to have made the original mistake, and compounded it by following it up the way he and his staff did. It's heading down the same path as the Kilgore campaign last year. And that doesn't make me happy.

actually I spell it B U L L .. you know the rest!

But, it has gained traction, so Allen has to extract himself ASAP from the fallout. Hopefully, it'll be gone by Labor Day when the serious campaigning begins. But we can't count on VA being a red state any more. Regretably, in 2005, every precinct in my formerly solidly Republican neighborhood went blue.

Stupid effing PC-nazis are turning fake sensitivities into a political issue that has absolutely zero affect on people's lives. And there are some pinhead FRINOS who buy into it. Anybody who decides their vote based on "macaca" is a dolt. There are real issues in this election, including James Webb's support for Saddam Hussein, at stake.

Alas, the news has informed us only that "macaca" referred to a type of monkey that lives in SOUTHEAST ASIA ~ see: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/information/Macaca_fascicularis.html

BTW, like most little boys, I am sure young George didn't listen to his mother, particularly if she went about telling people in Tunisia they were Burmese monkeys.

Speaking primarily Arabic, they'd be both aghast and mystified!

Yes, Virginians sometimes show a lingering fascination with fascism ~ and Webb will play on that.

Here's the difference in the two polls. Polling done 6/25/06 polled 44% Repub, 32% Dem and 22% Indy. Polling done 8/20/06 polled 39%Repub, 37% Dem and 21% Indy. A couple of percent of 1/2 percenters here and there.

Allens numbers stayed the same with Republicans, 90% of their vote each time. He lost a few points with the Indies and a few with dems. The major factor however is the sample. 5% more dems this time and 5% less pubbies. Considering there aren't many crossovers the difference in the polling margins is directly attributable to the sample I would think.

Here are the internals for 6/25 and here are the internals for 8/20.
