Oil company FEX is moving ahead with plans for exploration drilling in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska this winter.

"We will be drilling three to four wells this winter," said Barry Nelson, spokesman for Talisman Energy Inc., the Calgary, Alberta-based parent company of FEX.

Last winter, FEX drilled on its leases south of Cape Simpson, which lies roughly midway between Barrow to the west and the Alpine oil field to the east. Alpine is the westernmost North Slope oil field.

Nelson wouldn't say where FEX will drill this coming winter.

The company will use two drilling rigs in NPR-A this winter, Nelson said. One will be the Nabors rig used last winter. It's currently stacked at Cape Simpson. The other rig is expected to be the Arctic Wolf, newly built by Akita drilling in partnership with Doyon Drilling. The Arctic Wolf has been custom designed for use in northern applications.

FEX has talked in the past about using as many as three drilling rigs in NPR-A.

In the spring, FEX applied to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to barge equipment and supplies for this winter's drilling. The company planned to barge gear from Prudhoe Bay to Cape Simpson or Point Lonely on the east side of Simpson Bay. The company has established a staging area at Cape Simpson for exploration in the northwestern part of NPR-A.
