The airline terror plot to blow up at least seven transatlantic jets was intended to mark the fifth anniversary of September 11, intelligence sources have revealed.
But it was not executed because its alleged conspirators were too 'inexperienced' to carry it out.
The claims, by senior Pakistani security officials, came as Scotland Yard requested more time to question 23 of the 24 suspects arrested since last week.
The officials also alleged that many of those held learnt how to handle weapons and bomb-making training by reading textbooks.
A highly placed source said: 'Look at their ages ... their faces, you will hardly believe that they are terrorists, but the fact is that they were motivated and had a plan to carry out attacks.'
'I don't know how close they were from executing the attacks, but I personally believe that they wanted to do it to mark the (5th anniversary of) 9/11 attacks.
'I personally think they would have carried out the attacks if they had been experienced enough.'
It has also emerged that up to 17 people are now being held in Pakistan on suspicion of collaborating with the British 'cell'.

Seems like they were about a month away from trying to blow up a plane. Doesn't sound like inexperience to me.
It's worth noting that that Yousef fellow who planned a similar plot was not able to create an explosive powerful enough to take down a plane. His Bojinka dry run killed exactly one person. So I guess he was "inexperienced" even though he'd participated in numerous attacks before, including the 1993 WTC bombing.
So it may take them a few more tries to get it right, but one thing for sure: They never give up.

Ironic, late last night I had watched Bill O'Reilly and they had the presentation of the young couple who with their 6-month-old baby were going to blow up one of the jet planes. They were going to use that baby as a bomb. What makes it so ironic is that it was during the same hour that news show showed the picture of the man who killed the little Ramsey girl. This man's arrest ends the 10 years of accusations against the parents, ( sadly the mother having just past a few months back having lost her war against cancer ). The Ramsey family never gaved up hope that the real killer will be found.
The first family that would do such a horrific act shows what we are all up against.
Here's to hoping these terrorists never get any older...
