ANTI-TERRORIST detectives were last night granted more time to question 22 people arrested in the investigation of an alleged plot to blow up transatlantic passenger jets.

One person was freed last night unconditionally, and a decision on a 24th suspect will be made on Monday, Scotland Yard said last night.

Detectives and the security services were last night trying to piece together a complex web of middle-class British Muslims, recent converts to Islam and financial backers in Pakistan as they investigated how the alleged plot was put together.

All 24 people initially arrested in raids on Thursday morning were British. A further two British citizens were seized in Pakistan yesterday.

I was just wondering what was going on with these people as the Brits can only hold them for 26 hours before charging them.

I'm really interested in the couple with the baby. They've gotten a lot of the publicity.

In the UK you can go to a judge for extra time. In the case of terrorists they can be held for up to 28 days but at 7 days have to go before a branch judge for permission and at 14 days before the high court.

Fact is parliament voted down a 90 day holding bill (with juridical review) for such alleged terrorists a only 3 months ago. If this goes tot he wire there will be some red faces - including our Conservative party who voted (mostly) against the measure.
