Macintosh OS is listed as #8 on the authors list, but I'm a PC person. Is OS X the same thing or an updated version.

It's the tenth entry in the Mac OS line. Pretty sure that counts as a successor, even though it's a totally different codebase.

OS X for the Mac is outstanding. Beats any Windows OS hands down (ask Rush L).

Mac OSX is basically the same as #1 (BSD UNIX) -- with the human interface advantages of the Mac OS (#8).
IMHO, & FWIW, the greatest non-software in this realm is the Apple Human Interface Guidelines -- which make the Mac so intuitive that most folks never look at a manual.
Basic stuff -- like
- no surprises for the user
- always use the same menu bar layout across time
- always provide an "undo"
- dialogs should be "modeless" (Never 'trap' the user in a mode from which there is only one escape choice.)
- etc., etc., etc....
Most Mac users never saw the AHIG book -- which was for developers -- and which was/is strictly enforced by Apple -- but it is is one of the prime reasons they love their Macs.
