Here's the real debate: is it the team of Gov. Arnold Schwarzneegger or Democrat Phil Angelides who is telling the truth about upcoming gubernatorial debates?
The Schwarzennegger campaign, in recent emails to reporters, suggested that the camp of Phil Angelides has been guilty of game-playing in getting a debate together.
Campaign spokeswoman Katie Levinson, in a recent email, slammed what she called "the Angelides campaign's recent publicity stunts, unilateral and fictitious agreements and ongoing debates with themselves in the media," saying they were "an attempt by a flailing campaign to divert attention from Mr. Angelides' $18 billion tax hike."
Schwarzenegger campaign manager Steve Schmidt, in a conference call this week, also suggested the Angelides camp hasn't been serious about responding to their attempts to arrange a "debate that is as big as possible, that provides a great forum for California voters to focus on the key issues."
But those critiques really fry former State Senator John Burton -- who can get very expressive when he's angry. The past State Senate Pro Tem, who is Angelides' chief debate negotiator, says that he's made it clear that Angelides will debate anytime, anyplace, and as soon as possible.
In a phone call this morning, he says he's been in contact by phone and by letter to Schwarzenegger debate negotiators -- former GOP State Senator Jim Brulte, and attorney Steve Merksamer and has "gotten no response from them whatsoever."
--snip--
Already, Schwarzenegger folks have repeatedly suggested -- and Schmidt did this week -- that past governors have done one debate, or none, and Schwarzenegger isn't likely to change that.
"I don't know why ... Arnold ain't afraid to go mano a mano," responds Burton. "It's his handlers."
