New Team For Gallagher
Palm Beach Post ^ | August 14, 2006 | Brian E. Crowley

Tom Gallagher’s campaign has changed media consultants and will begin airing new television ads this week with a sharper focus on the issues in the hope of overcoming Charlie Crist in the Republican primary.

Mike Murphy, one of the nation’s most successful GOP media strategists and consultant Matt Leonardo are taking over the task of writing and producing television and radio ads for the campaign. They replace media consultant Scott Howell who left the campaign.

Howell’s departure comes on the heels of the resignations of David Johnson, Gallagher’s general campaign consultant, and David Browning, the campaign’s finance director. Losing key staff this late in a campaign usually happens when there is disagreement over the direction of a campaign.

“Tom Gallagher should tell voters, ‘here are the differences’ between me and Charlie Crist,” said Murphy, who helped elect Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, Mitt Romney, governor of Massachusetts and Gov. Jeb Bush.

Murphy said polls showing Chief Financial Officer Gallagher well behind Attorney General Crist do not reflect the “much bigger voter swings” that you get in primary elections. But Murphy also acknowledged that Gallagher remains at least 15 points behind and victory is “still a long shot.”

Murphy said he has been talking to Gallagher for about two weeks concerning the direction of the campaign. Murphy said he urged Gallagher to stay in the race and focus on the issues that GOP primary voters care about such as taxes and gay marriage.

“This race is far from over,” said Murphy who lives in California. “Tom has a real chance to win.”

Murphy, who is known for his hard-hitting ads, said the campaign will not attack Crist but said it will be a “spirited three weeks.”

The primary election is Sept. 5th.

Getting lots of invites to a Charlie Crist rally in Orlando featuring John McCain and Mel Martinez. Not sure why they think that's going to win me over.

I just returned home from spending some time in FL and must say I thought that the Gallagher ads were horrible and did nothing to focus on his differences with Crist.

The Dem takes the cake for dumb with the ad with the helicopters.

Glad to see Gallagher changing staff.

Gallagher's not quitting. That was wishful thinking on Crist's part.

When I think of Gallagher, I immediately remember what happened to insurance rates on his watch (Ouch!) and his brilliant idea to put a 6% tax on services in Florida... and flip-flopping on gun control (he was for it before he found out he could get more votes by being against it).

Jeb Bush quote: "Gallagher makes Lawton Chiles look conservative" with all of his proposed tax increases. I have no reason to believe that Crist is much better....he just has fewer negatives. How sad is that?

We have two pitiful candidates to choose from in this primary and they want to put a prettier wrapper on one of them....big deal!

The Democrats must be really getting excited.

You missed some even worse ads run earlier. He was doing the equivalent of the Howard Dean style shout with the alleged reason being there was too much noise and he needed to shout.

His campaign could have picked a more quiet locattion (especially for the bucks they're spending) where he would not have to shout.

Makes one believe there must be a special reason for doing it that way....and I hope they keep it up because everyone seems to be turned off by his political ads, and the more he turns off, the better.

You've been jumping from thread to thread, putting an ugly wrapper on one of them. You want to tell us why you think the other one is a pitiful candidate? Or is that just whitewash, to give your trashing of the conservative candidate an air of "balance?"

Instead of pinging, you should be at your window looking for those secret unmaked cars that are "surveilling" you. Remember?

Your post: "I'm sick of looking out the window to see if I'm being surveilled".

AS I have said I think they are both pitiful candidates.

I simply think that, so far, Gallagher has proven to be the most pitiful.

How tough a comncept is that to figure out?

Got some stuff on Crist? I'd like to hear that too. So far, his negatives have been a flakey stuff nand Gallagher's have been much harder to shrug off.

Don't be silly. There's nothing flakey about conservative values. Crist has spoken out against conservative values like the right to life. Not only on the issue of stem cell research, but across the board, to include the right of self-aware adults not to be tortured to death. I think that's a lot more important than being falsely accused of some minor crap that nobody cares about.

And btw, you were aware of Crist's anti-conservative stance before I even started this thread. Just because liberals think life isn't important, doesn't mean conservatives will agree.

Just like I said, we have to choose between two losers.

One of them is just better known for being one than the other....so far.

Well, you've certainly been working overtime to make everyone aware that the other one is a loser too. All of your accusations have been addressed by others, and proven false. So you really have your work cut out for you. I guess you don't need to bother telling us what a loser Crist is. Everybody seems to already know.

Wrong about proven false. I only have what I actually know to go on, and it was enough to convince me who is the Clinton clone in this race. The other guy may be even worse, but so far nobody has come up with anything any more convincing other than "he let Terri die"....like he's the guy that did it.

No. There was never gonna be a different outcome with her as long as the Florida Supreme Court was standing ready to pounce on it with great gusto and ridicule those of us who clung to our conservative ideals.

Neither Crist or Gallagher were effective on this issue but I see from your profile that you need someone to blame. I just can't figure out why you need to stretch the blame that far.

If you have to mischaracterize what was said about Crist not doing his job, and contributing to Terri's murder, then you're probably being less than honest about other things too. Well, I've seen others disprove some of your claims. Nobody claimed that Crist's actions exonerate everyone else. As a matter of fact, I plainly stated that they don't. So you might want to quit throwing out that false accusation.
