More than 70 anti-terrorist investigations involving over 100 suspected Islamic extremists are under way in Britain in an operation unmatched even at the height of the IRA's mainland campaign.
John Reid, the Home Secretary, confirmed yesterday that police and security services were aware of about 24 "major conspiracies".
They are believed to be "multi-handed" terrorist plots, such as the alleged plan to blow up transatlantic airliners that led to the arrest of 24 people last Thursday.
Sources say that, on top of the inquiries confirmed by Mr Reid, up to 50 more are being conducted by anti-terrorist police, most of them involving Scotland Yard and MI5.
A significant amount of the activity involves internet communication between groups, often young Muslim men at college or university.

What this demonstrates that the terrorists are continuing to target us and it's part luck and part excellent intelligence work that kept us from having another attack. All that AND the important tools, such as NSA intercepts, tracking of monetary transactions and other activities that help us foil the attacks.

And so, of course, the UK and US have *downgraded* their terror alerts.
Aye yi yi.

You should be glad some "Unnamed official" didn't leak the entire info to the BBC or NY Times, before the current group was rounded up.

Note to have history repeat itself, but I think they downgraded the terror alert just before 9-11-01 too. (At that time there weren't public terror alerts, but they were still monitoring the likelihood of terror attacks -- there was more chatter in July 2001, but then it stopped, just before the actual attacks.)

Profiling. It works. Couldn't agree with you more! Too bad, the government can't see it that way! We need to stop every foreign student with any link to the middle east and quit being so damn politically correct!

The policy of allowing these lunatics to establish themselves in the UK has come home to roost in spades. Will the US be smart enough to learn from it?

FoxNews just reporting that Reid was saying that there are still over 1000 known terrorists in London, who may perpetrate attacks of apocalyptic nature.

Islam shows why it needs a severe weeding and major reform.
Unless they quickly become civilized and stop the terror cr@p, it's going to be banned like Nazis.

THANK YOU for starting this thread Fair Opinion.
My Opinion-Points.
1, Jihad is an everyday thing to a jihadi; like gangbanging
is to a gangbanger. It's a chosen lifestyle.
2. The global jihad is just that -- global.
3. The jihadis unite in one global community -- on the internet.
4. The global jihad is global terrorism.

"over 1000 known terrorists in London"
It seems that the Brits did a fine job breaking up this airline plot (so long as we don't suddenly discover that there were enough terrorists who escaped the net to pull off other attacks in the coming weeks). But almost everyone in the west (and Israel) is still much too soft on the known terrorists. Anyone who has even the slightest connection to any terror group or plot should be imprisoned for a minimum of 20 years, period. Anyone who has actually done anything significant toward carrying out a terror plot should be executed, period. Until the peoples and the governments of the west understand that we are all in a battle for our survival, against many of the most depraved killers ever known, we are not really serious.
Those "1000 known terrorists" should not be free, period.

Police hunt 'two dozen' terror cells in Britain

Just thing 24 cells with some 20-50 terrorists in each one -- that's the around 1000 that Reid mentioned that are still out there. And this is only in the UK.
I bet there are similar numbers in the US -- but we mustn't listen to their phone conversation or look through their phone bills to find out whom they are calling, much better to let them finish planning and actually perpetrate their attacks, killing thousands of Americans, rather that violate the "civil rights of terrorists to kill us".

The Shah of Iran was trying to do just that, bring them into the 20th century, but Jimmy Carter wouldn't let him -- with the result of the Ayatollah taking over Iran, starting the resurgence of radical Islam.
