TERROR suspects involved in the plot to bring down passenger jets over the Atlantic posed as relief workers to travel to al-Qaeda training camps in Pakistan.
Key members of the British terror gang are understood to have travelled to the country's lawless border region with Afghanistan to learn bomb-making techniques.
Security services and Pakistani intelligence are trying to piece together the movements of several plotters.
Officials believe the trips – which the men claimed were to carry out charity work with refugees from the Afghan war and the earthquake in Kashmir in 2005 – allowed them to meet terror leaders.
It was during these trips the airline plot was conceived and developed, security and intelligence sources claim.
According to Pakistani police, some of the alleged plotters travelled to Pakistan after the October earthquake to work as volunteers in relief camps.
The camps were run by Lashkar-e-Toiba, designated a terror group by the US State Department and banned by the Pakistan Government.
The UN has classified the group as being associated with al-Qaeda.
The details emerged after it was revealed two of the men arrested in connection with the plot – Tayib and Rashid Rauf – have links to a British aid organisation, Crescent Relief.
The arrest of Rashid Rauf in Pakistan triggered last week's raids in London and Birmingham.
Rauf, who left for Pakistan four years ago after his uncle was murdered, is suspected of taking orders from fugitive al-Qaeda commander Matiur Rehman.
He is alleged to have communicated by satellite phone with some of the suspects arrested last week. He was held in Rawalpindi but not interrogated immediately.
Despite painstaking efforts to keep his arrest secret, news leaked out to at least one associate.

There is no suggestion the charity is linked to the terror plot – the two suspects' father Abdul helped set it up.
At least three suspects arrested in last week's raids have been to Pakistan in recent months, according to friends and neighbours. Brothers Assad and Amjad Sarwar visited the country, as did taxi driver Waseem Kayani.
A friend of Assad, 26, and Amjad, 28, said the visit was to help victims of the earthquake in the mountainous Kashmir and northwest frontier regions.
"They went to help with the charity work, like a lot of people did," he said.
Pakistani officials last night linked a second British charity to the plot.
Officials in Karachi claimed the unnamed charity transferred huge sums to banks in the Azad Kashmir region to pay for the aircraft plot.
They said two British citizens of Kashmiri origin and a third man, an Islamabad-based builder, had been in receipt of the earthquake relief cash. All have been arrested.
Of the 24 suspects arrested, one has been released without charge and the remaining 23 suspects are in custody.
Under new anti-terror laws they can be detained for 28 days without charge.
Oh God.....what evil barbarians.
Time to find these "camps" and flatten them with B-52's.
The mindless repetition of an absurdity, that "these suspects cannot be assumed to be connected to world-wide terror", is getting really really irritating...

This article at least implies that the suspects were rounded up after word leaked that one of the plotters in Pakistan had been arrested. Yet other articles posted here have said that the arrests were made after an explicit order to carry out the attacks was intercepted, e.g. "Alarm as plotters told 'attack now'"
It's not inconceivable that the articles are referring to the same intercept, but it seems odd how a different spin is put onto the decision to move forward with the arrests.
How are you going to do that when the average all-american mosque ARE the "camps'?

I have never been in a mosque of any kind. I only know the muslims I work with, and I can only go on that. If our government thinks plots are being hatched in American mosques against our country, I have faith they will find a way to bring it out, and it will be dealt with.

I have seen this many times attributed to Muslim terrorists on FR and elsewhere, but it's just wrong and even a casual look at the evidence clearly demonstrates that it is wrong.
Sirhan Sirhan was an Arab sympathetic to Palestine in their protracted beef with Israel, and reportedly was very upset with RFK for his support of Israel during the Six Day War.
His parents practiced Jordanian Christianity and he was raised with that faith. As he matured, he dabbled in numerous religious faiths, and the ones that held his interest the longest were Baptist, Seventh Day Adventism and several forms of occultism.
While clearly unbalanced and very likely antisemitic, there is no evidence he was a Muslim anywhere near the time he assassinated RFK.
You can't use Arab and Muslim interchangeably. I have seen this list many times and it loses credibility instantly being wholly wrong in the first item it lists.
