Bush: Free World Will Win War on Terror
American Forces Press Service ^ | Pety Officer 3rd Class John R. Guardiano

Posted on 08/13/2006 9:37:28 AM PDT by SandRat

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2006 – In his weekly radio address yesterday, President Bush reiterated American resolve against extremist terrorists and declared that the free world will prevail against enemies of freedom. “America, Great Britain, and our allies are determined to defend ourselves and advance the cause of liberty,” Bush said. “With patience, courage, and untiring resolve, we will defend our freedom, and we will win the war on terror.”

The president acknowledged the enormity of the challenge that still lies ahead. “America is fighting a tough war against an enemy whose ruthlessness is clear for all to see,” he said. “The terrorists attempt to bring down airplanes full of innocent men, women and children. They kill civilians and American servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they deliberately hide behind civilians in Lebanon.”

Hezbollah terrorists have been firing rockets into Israel and hiding behind civilians to deter Israeli retaliation in a war that has raged for more than a month. Iraq and Afghanistan, meanwhile, continue to be plagued with terrorist violence.

The past week’s arrests in Great Britain of suspects in an alleged plot to blow up airliners en route from England to the United States underscore the need for vigilance, Bush told the radio audience. “If these terrorists had succeeded, they could have caused death on a massive scale,” he said.

Terrorists, Bush noted, “are seeking to spread their totalitarian ideology. They’re seeking to take over countries … so they can establish safe havens from which to attack free nations.” Defeating them will “take patience, courage, and untiring resolve,” he said.

America today is safer than it was prior to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the Unites States, Bush said. However, he continued, “we must never make the mistake of thinking the danger of terrorism has passed. … This week's events demonstrate the vital importance of ensuring that our intelligence and law enforcement personnel have all the tools they need to track down the terrorists and prevent attacks on our country.”

Bush pledged continued diligence in fighting terrorism and urged Americans to stand behind the effort. “With patience, courage, and untiring resolve, we will defend our freedom, and we will win the war on terror,” he said.

It would be more impressive if he was serious about this war.

Whew, the Bushbots spring up out of nowhere! Any criticism of Bush means that I'm now a liberal Democrat. Of course. Bush is our Lord Jesus Christ who can do no wrong.

While I voted for him twice, Bush has lot a lot of credibility with me across the board--from winking at illegal immigration to pressuring Israel to let itself be humiliated by Hezbollah. If he was really serious about fighting the WOT he would have limited entitlements and increased the size of the military. Instead, the military is actually shrinking. The defining moment for me was when he urged people to go shopping after 9/11 instead of enlisting. And, yes, I do think that Iraq is in such poor shape today cause we committed just enough troops to not loose, as opposed to trying to win the peace. In many ways, he continues to wink at the terrorists and their supporters.

Would I have changed my vote? No--because in both elections the alternatives were unacceptable. And Bush has done a number of things right. However, Bush's actions have definitely not lived up to his rhetoric.

The guy talks a good game, then joins France to push through a ceasefire initiative between Israel and Hezbollah. France! Condi has been talking of nothing but the killing of civilians for weeks. CIVILIANS??????

If we continue to stop our friends from exterminating their terrorist enemies, we sure as hell won't win the war on terror. We'll also lose some close allies in the process.

"It would be more impressive if he was serious about this war."

I agree with you. When entering a war at the start we must decide if we want to win or not.

If we decide we do not want to win we tie our hands behind our backs and see how well we can do.

I completely agree with you. Forget about the people here who call you a troll for having the audacity to not worship the ground President Bush walks on. What those people seem to forget is that Bush is not infallible. He is just a man, not the second coming of Christ. Of course, some people here can't seem to make the distinction. Do I think that he has done everything right in the war? No. Does that mean that I would rather have a democrat running things? Absolutely not; but try telling that to the Bushbots.

IMO, Bush has done a terrific job in taking the fight to our enemies, something no one else on the other side of the aisle would ever do. However, I do think that he has done a very poor job of communicating to the nation and our allies, dealing with Iran, and I strongly disagree with his backing of the UN cease fire resolution concerning Israel and Hezbollah. I guess that makes me a traitorous, scumbag, leftist, democrat troll huh? Whatever...

Many conservatives are fed up with the lack of focus on winning the war.

I would also add that one of the President's biggest mistakes is continuing to call this conflict the 'War on Terror'. What a crock. This means absolutely nothing. We are not fighting 'terror'. We are fighting islamic fascists, who happen to use terror as a weapon.

Good point. It's hard to win a war if we aren't clear on who we're fighting. A "War on Terror" is as meaningless as a War on Murder. We're not fighting a mode of operation - we're fighting a specific set of people who want to use terrorism to kill us. It's our job to kill those people.
