Report: Boston Targeted In Terror Plot
Yahoo News ^ | August 11,2006

Boston may have been one of the targets in the alleged plot to blow up airplanes headed to the United States from Great Britain, according to published reports NewsCenter 5's Steve Lacey reported Friday that information out of London Friday is in sharp contradiction to what Gov. Mitt Romney said Thursday about the plot.

Several British newspapers are quoting U.S. officials saying the planes targeted by the terrorists were headed to New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston.

British authorities said that the plan was to blow up planes in mid-flight using explosives smuggled in hand luggage. The newspapers reported the bombs were to detonate not over the Atlantic Ocean -- but over the cities while the planes were landing, causing even more casualties on the ground. Despite these reports, the governor is standing by his assertion that the Hub was not at risk.

The terror alert level has not been raised by the MBTA, but that does not mean people taking the Silver Line from South Station to Logan Airport will not notice an increased police presence.

MBTA police and K-9 crews are out in force Thursday. The MBTA officers said they hope to ease the burden on security officials at Logan and help riders gain peace of mind.

Maybe the terrorists were going to loosen the bolts in the Big Dig.

I don't see this as Mitt being stubborn. He's not stupid. The facts are just going to come out in a jumble for the next few days.

There's quite a bit of speculation going on in the British press as to destinations targeted. Miami was also mentioned in one report.

The bottom line is exactly what difference does it make, if the plan was to detonate explosives over the Atlantic ocean? Sure, the destinations were symbolic (major American cities), and Boston, having been one of the departure points for the 9/11 terrorists, would probably be on the list, but again, if they didn't intend to reach their destination, the destinations aren't all that relevant.

The fact that American citizens would die, and American aircraft destroyed, OTOH, is very relevant.

Soldiers from the Massachusetts National Guard are deputized shortly after arriving at Logan International Airport in Boston August 10, 2006. The plot foiled by Britain to blow up U.S.-bound flights would been as horrific as the Sept. 11 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on Thursday. You missed part of the post. According to that, the detonations were to take place over the target cities, not over the Atlantic.

I would think that they would explode over the cities to maximize the carnage but when I flew on BA they do not allow people to go to the lav's for about a 1/2 hour before landing, and this was pre 911

Great. My son is flying out of Logan today to come back to DFW. He's been out of touch with the news as to what is going on. So I called him yesterday to tell him to get to the airport early and either get rid of all his shaving cream etc or put it in another bag to check because he usually only travels with carry-on if possible.

forgot to post the rest. That may be why they target the US flights.

This was foiled in the air. What will stop a plot that targets commuter trains in tunnels at rush hour? Or cruise ships at sea?

I know you must be concerned for your sons safety, but if I was to fly this would be the day that I suspect would be the safest.

You're probably right. Got a feeling he may be in line at the airport for a while though.

And the jumble of facts will undoubtedly lead to more conspiracy theories.
