SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Heavy metal singer Chris Barnes didn't know what people would think of "Amerika the Brutal," an anti-war song he wrote after his cousin deployed to Iraq in 2003.

He heard a number of complaints - but also received supportive e-mails from American troops in the war zone.

"I wonder if they plan to play in Iran?"

Or if they'll sell more than 10,000 albums. What a bunch of America-hating losers.

The question is, is it good? I don't mind messages in music (even if I disagree) if it rocks.

Was that subjected sufficiently to disambiguation? I mean, was the heavy metal properly identified as manganese, molybdenum, or vanadium?

"Metal music in the 1980s was often homophobic and "very white," she said, but current bands tend to be socially conscious and suspicious of political power."

But are they still "homophobic" and white? Methinks the answer is a resounding YES!

What a retarded article. "Normally we could care less about white people and their music but since they are speaking out against America, they are A-O-K."

Oh wow, a rock band against conservatism. I'm stunned.

Bono's going to be mad someone stole his spotlight.

The article contradicts itself too. In the beginning it says Heavy Metal artists are starting to become socially conscious rather than merely into the whole dark arts thing, and then at the end it says Heavy Metal has always been socially conscious.

A socially conscious heavy metal rock band - as long as they have electricity coming out of the outlets and the freedom of expression...

I believe the metal was identified as lead, not of the type used for airships and therefore worthless. :)

Funny how they only write about lefty pacifist dorks. Why don't they go interview Gene Simmons, Ted Nugent, or any member of Slayer?

Judas Priest "Turbo" is about as far from homophobic as one can get! (an 80's metal album)
