Unlike what the MSM is trying to portray, I believe this has been the plan all along, let the IAF soften the targets and cut off paths then go in with overwhelming ground forces. Brilliant move by US by making it look like us and France were really working together for a ceasefire knowing France would bail out thus squashing any resolution.

Frankly, I am sick of it. They're here in the US and they're critiquing the situation in Israel.

Those who us who love Israel have been critiquing the make-pretend war waged by the Israeli government. Either you go all out on the ground - or don't bother. That's the way wars are meant to be fought. Israel will pay a price of course but if she waits, the circumstances will never be as favorable again. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to finish off Hezbollah as a military threat in Lebanon. Its not important if the terror group survives politically. What's important is to disarm it of any weapons that can be used to threaten and attack Israel and keep it well away from the border.

This is excellent news. I was afraid the antisemite forces would succeed in pressuring Israel into stopping. I'm cautiously optomistic that President Bush is encouraging Israel behind the scene, while giving lip-service to the U.N. publicly.
I understand why, with the moonbat anti-war lunatics in our own country, he doesn't think he openly blow off the U.N., but I wish he would anyway.

AMEN to that! Iran & Syria have turned Hezbollah into an standing army with advanced weaponry right on the Israeli border, threatens Israel with being wiped from the map, launches an attack on a sovereign UN security council nation, launches indiscriminate missle attacks on civilian populations but Israel is the bad guy according to most of the world. What a joke! Hezbollah does not need to operate under the Geneva convention in any way, shape or form but Israel must and does.

Let's face stark reality: Until Syria and Iran is directly confronted they will re-arm Hezbollah or create some other new islamic jihad army. The longer Israel and America waits to confront Iran and Syria, the more advanced the weapons used by such proxy armies will become. The UN should be having discussions of how to stop Iran and Syria from such proxy wars but instead focus on how abusive Israel is to the poor Lebanese who decided to NOT leave the war zone. Of course let's not bother mentioning that the UN did nothing to support it's own resolution to disarm Hezbollah and is in large part responsible for this current conflict.

The kidnapping of the Israeli soldiers was Iran's WAG THE DOG.
A huge miscalculation on their part. They thought Olmert was toothless! Hah!
Clearly it is Israel that is occupying huge swaths of Lebanon and not the other way around.

It's not going to be quick in any way, shape or form. The Israelis operate under the same rules of engagement we do and that is to spare as much civilian lives as possible at all cost. Since it's a favorite tactic of Hezbollah to hide behind civilians it is difficult to even know who the enemy is never mind holding back when an enemy is firing at you to minimize casualties. The gloves will have to come off and it will need to get very bloody for Israel to reach it's objectives.

Totally agree.

I wish I could share the enthusiasm. However, this was an "authorization" for an offensive, not the signal it would commence. From Haaretz:
"....The cabinet authorized Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz to widen the offensive and to determine its timing. According to the decision, however, the two are not obliged to implement the decision.
The offensive would not begin for two or three days so as not interfere with ongoing efforts to broker a cease-fire at the United Nations, said one minister in the meeting.
Nine of the 12 ministers in the cabinet voted in favor of the move, while the other three abstained. There were no votes against the decision.
Labor Party Ministers Shimon Peres and Ophir Pines-Paz, who abstained from voting, said all diplomatic channels must be exhausted before the war is expanded. Shas's Industry and Trade Minister Eli Yishai also abstained, saying the ground operation should not be widened until air strikes have run their course.
During a break in the cabinet meeting, Olmert telephoned U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to provide her with an update on the situation."
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/748019.html
However, over at the UN our good ally France is working furiously to ensure a Hezbollah victory:
"French President Jacques Chirac said on Wednesday he believed US bjections to a draft UN resolution on Lebanon amended at the Arab world's request could be overcome, despite Washington's "reservations."
French diplomats have handed their US colleagues proposed revisions to a French and US-backed United Nations resolution to end the war in Lebanon.
The Lebanese government, supported by the Arab League, rejected the original text which called for full cessation of hostilities but which did not demand an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from the country.
"It does seem that there is an American reservation about adopting this draft," Chirac told reporters after a meeting with members of his cabinet in the south of France.
"I can't imagine that there would be no solution because that would mean, which would be the most immoral result, that we accept the current situation and that we abandon an immediate ceasefire," he said. "I can't imagine that of the Americans or anyone else."
Diplomats continue to work on revisions to the UN draft resolution and Chirac said it was normal that the views of all parties to the conflict should be taken into account."

The only bummer is that Damascus is turned into ash because Israel is hit first with a WMD of some sort. I am not as cheery as you are on this subject.
