Former Astronaut John Glenn, Wife Recover From Car Accident

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Former senator and astronaut John Glenn and his wife, Annie, were discharged Sunday from a hospital where they had been recovering from what he called a “very serious'' car accident.

“I do not recommend you go test your air bags the way we did the other night,” Glenn said.

Neither Glenn nor his wife was seriously injured, said Dr. Paul Beery. Beery said the former senator suffered a minor fracture in his sternum. Glenn was struck in the chest by his car’s air bag as it deployed during the accident, according to past reports.

“As far as this being minor, it's not minor to me because it hurts,” said the 85-year-old Glenn.

Annie Glenn, 86, is recovering from what her husband called “bumps and bruises.”

The couple was returning home late Friday from a fundraiser for gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland at a suburban Columbus country club when John Glenn tried to make a left turn onto a highway ramp, said his former press secretary Dale Butland.

An oncoming car hit the front end of Glenn's car. The driver, Amy Myers of suburban New Albany, was not injured. Police cited Glenn for failure to yield, Butland said.

“He saw a lot of cars in the distance, but did not see this car that was right up on him,” Butland said earlier. “They are very, very grateful that nobody was hurt more seriously, including the other party involved in the accident.”

Myers told The Columbus Dispatch that Glenn was “very sincerely sorry.”

Glenn, who served in the Senate from 1974 to 1998, first made headlines in 1962, when he piloted the first manned orbital mission of the United States. He went back into space in 1998, at the age of 77.

Glenn was very much disliked by his fellow astronauts.

It's easy to see why!

"No, he should keep driving until he kills someone you love. After all, he's only 85."

There you are I knew you'd show up. Guess a mistake is as good as a death warrant with you. I've made the same mistake as Mr. Glenn once upon a time, you gonna take my license too?

If you can't drive any better than john glenn, you shouldn't have a license either. I don't know what you're trying to say about a death warrant, but when some geezer kills your loved one, don't expect sympathy from me.

"f you can't drive any better than john glenn,"

I love it when people make assumptions.

There needs to be criteria where you must be retested, for vision, rules of the road, and an actual road test. I think over the age of 65 it should be required every two years... and to be honest, under 65 it should be every 5-10 years or so.

Oh, and I would not charge the seniors for this test. I am sure that will be a non-starter... but let's be fair.

re: John sold his soul for one more ride into space. A harder choice to make than you might think.)))

I agree with the first part--only the US citizen got sold out when he joined forces with Reno to keep secrets about the Chi Coms from damaging the Clinton administration. He didn't just get a ride worth $20M, he got debt forgiveness from the DNC to the order of $3M.

What I disagree with is that he found the choice in any way difficult. Not only would some of these desperate pilots sell out the US, there's a lot who would kill for the ticket. Or, "mission"--as they'd prefer to call it.

Are you familiar with the word "if"? Glenn was cited for the accident.

Kind of reminds me of the Volkswagon "Safety Happens" commercials

I love those commercials. They're a great reminder of just how easy it is to get into a car accident.

As a child, John Glenn was probably my first hero.

COL John Glenn was worthy of your childhood respect, and you have no reason to be ashamed.

SEN John Glenn is deserving only of contempt.
