AMMAN — The criminal prosecutor on Saturday charged a 19-year-old youth with the premeditated murder of his sister, official sources said.
The victim, a 22-year-old divorcee, was shot six times at the family home at around mid-night on Thursday, the source told The Jordan Times.
The suspect allegedly shot his sister in front of his parents and siblings following and argument concerning her alleged “immoral behaviour,” the source added.
“The suspect then headed to the nearest police station and turned himself in and handed the pistol allegedly used in the murder to officers on duty,” said the source, adding that the youth claimed to have killed his sister for reasons of family honour.
A government post-mortem conducted by pathologists Azzam Haddad and Hussein Abul Samen indicated that the woman received multiple gunshot wounds to her head, chest, stomach, arm and leg.
The medical examination also indicated that the woman was not pregnant or sexually active on the day she was murdered, the source added.
A second source told The Jordan Times some of the victim’s family members denied it was a crime of honour and that the victim “enjoyed a good reputation among her community.”
“The suspect claimed he killed her for reasons of family honour to get a reduced sentence but many people are convinced this is not the reason... no one knows the real motive behind the murder,” the source said.
The suspect confessed and reenacted the murder in front of the criminal prosecutor on Saturday, the source said.
Under Article 98 of the Penal Code the accused is entitled to a reduced sentence if the crime was committed in an act of fury “caused by an unlawful or dangerous act on the part of the victim.”
Criminal Prosecutor Mamoun Ramini ordered the suspect to be detained for 14 days pending further investigations.
Based on the suspect’s initial claims, the victim became the 10th woman murdered this year in so-called honour crimes and the second to be killed within the space of a week.
On July 29, a 26-year-old Jordan Valley woman was hacked to death by her 69-year-old mother and sister after delivering a baby out of wedlock.
The victim delivered a baby boy on the day of the murder.
It's bewildering. But then, the Arabs always seem like they have to be on hyperactive survival mode. I mean, they behave this way in civilized countries too where there is no civil war, but bring it with them, however unintentionally.
