Canada is a rich country and shouldn't be subsidized by Americans paying the full cost of R&D for drugs. The net result of allowing Americans to import drugs from Canada will be closer equalization of pricing between both markets.

If a country wishes to have an expensive FDA approval process such as we do in the United States, then of course our drugs will be more expensive and, supposedly, safer. If an American wants to take a calculated risk on using a cheaper import version (so long as it hasn't violated a patent, trademark and is properly labeled), we should be big enough boys and girls to make that decision without the nanny government looking over our shoulder.

I suspect that it will result in tighter contracts between the drug companies and these countries.

I'll reconsider this. If the result is to impede Canada's attempts to force the US to shoulder all of the burden of developing drugs, I could buy in to it...
