Which is to say that (illegal) immigrants of the early 20th century were forced to make it here or fail. And plenty did, returning to their home countries.
But the modern Welfare State -- food stamps, free healthcare, school lunch programs -- encourages Illegals to stick around.

This is why, after I get a better job, I will be writing to the President stating that I want to try privatizing my social security into a personal bank account that will save all the hard earned money that I work for. Then, after counting up all the money that I have paid into the system, I will take that amount, put it in the account, and then opt out of the general system entirely. Screw it, those illegals and irresponsible bums aren't getting another dime from me!!

If you think about it, the federal goverment is bankrupt, I would bet they are sweating because there is no money for SS. If they allow a guest worker program, the guest workers will be taxed therefore, 20 million people can start feeding the goverment, its a quick way to generate lots of cash. They refuse to see the ramifications though because they only see the green.
