HAIFA, Israel. -- Some have suggested the latest round of fighting between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah organization in Lebanon is the beginning of World War III. But a better analogy may be the 1936 Spanish Civil War.

Apparently today is the day Hitler became Fuhrer in 1934 and the day in 1990 that Hussein invaded Kuwait.
Interesting!
And it is also the day that Wild Bill Hickok was shot by Jack McCall while playing poker.
Hickok was holding black aces and black eights with a queen of hearts kicker which is now known as the "Dead Man's Hand".

Hehe... Iran would do well to stand down, to sit.
I have no doubt that the Israeli's could handily scorch Iran - much worse attack if the USA is drawn in... Also, I'm sure we'd have the support, although, not need from Japan, UK, etc...
Who would you want in existence to serve as Trade Partners and the like, Iran or the USA?
What about Aug 22? (((gulp)))
Aug. 22 corresponds to Rajab 27 on the Muslim calendar. The date is called Lailat Al Israa, when Mohammed ascended to heaven from the Al Aqsa mosque to receive the five daily prayers. Later, Al Aqsa came to represent Jerusalem.
The Muslim commemoration is meant to be a night of struggle, accompanied by thunder and lightening, resembling the story of Moses ascending Mount Sinai to receive the Old Testament.

I buy into that. This is just the chilling Prelude. The Fugue has yet to be played...
And I have come full circle on my position on the Israeli/Islam conflict. I've tried really hard to stay strictly neutral, but can no longer adopt that position with any good conscience.
Over the past few days I've contemplated my viewpoint. These days are precisely like the Spanish Civil War, and something much bigger, much uglier is lurking just over the horizon. Back then, there would have been plenty of people who would not have backed the Communists against Franco because, well, they were Communist.
But it was the right thing to do, as things worked out.
We are in the same position today. This is a conflict that Israel must win. All right-minded people must support them in this fight. Militant Islam must be concluded.
To those I've pinged, you get a free "I told you so" on me, as we have exchanged dialog on this over the past few days. If you like, I was wrong and you were right. Tonite the IDF shall have a pizza on me on the strength of it, too: seems like a great way to make amends. (see http://www.pizzaidf.org/ )
Time to choose whose side we're on. I've now chosen.

But in that case it was a matter of picking the lessor of two evils, or leaving them to tear each other up. If Hitler had attacked Stalin before the West, I'd have been voting for standing on the sidelines and cheering both of them on. All the while arming to the teeth to take on the "winner". Japan also complicated the situation, and was arguably the greater "enemy" at least until about '38 or '39.
Incidentally, didn't many of the '30s Reds make their bones fighting against Franco and for the Communists. They became the mentors of the 60s Reds who in tern are the "role models" of today's ANSWR and like groups. Many are now the mainstream media and the behind the scenes Democratic operatives.
