Activists boiling mad over cruel lobster tale
The Boston Herald ^ | 08/01/2006 | Steve Ryan

Lobster defenders are seeing red after two local men were nabbed for allegedly snapping the tails off live crustaceans and tossing the traumatized creatures back into the sea.

Anthony T. Gozzo, 52, of Billerica and his partner, Mark E. Turcotte, 20, of Lowell were arraigned in East Boston District Court yesterday on 202 counts of possessing mutilated lobster.

“I certainly hope these fishermen are punished to the fullest extent of the law for this sick crime,” said Matt Prescott of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - which isn’t crazy about lobster boiling, either.

Environmental police spotted the pair near the Quartermaster Marina in East Boston and arrested them after finding lobster tails and egg-bearing female lobsters in unmarked crates that police say were being loaded into the trunk of the suspects’ car.

The penalty for mutilating lobster is between $100 and $500 per lobster for the first offense and between $500 and $,1000 per lobster with possible jail time for subsequent offenses, under a law intended prevent the taking of undersized lobsters and keep stocks healthy.

“It is believed that this is not Mr. Gazzo’s first offense in this regard,” said Jake Wark of the District Attorney’s Office.

I eat 'em before they're up.

Eat them pigs in a blanket.

Eat 'em and drink strong black coffee steaming from my mustache cup.

Massachusetts has four separate State police departments, The State police, The Registry Police, The MDC Cops and the Environmental Police.

The bottom line... in Massachusetts, If it ain't illegal, it's mandatory...

PETA are such media whores you wonder if they actually do anything productive for their cause besides protest and make statments to newspapers.

They're a pretty pathetic group if you ask me.

The stupidity of these groups is really encapsulated in the names they take, Like "Animal Liberation Front".

Animals aren't "born free" into some Disney utopia. Nature, not man, is the cruelest taskmaster of the animal kingdom. There are no animal hospitals there. No humane treatment. The suffering of old and young, the brutality of fights to decide dominance, the strict pecking order, exposure to the elements, scarcity and famine, all apply.

But no. For Peta, animals away from man's "cruelty" are "free" to live in the wonderful and scenic natural world. Maybe they all have time shares in Thoreau's cabin...

Yes, real life in the oceans is brutal.

While diving, I have seen tailess fish that somehow survived, as well as mutilated shrimp. It is eat or be eaten, out there.

PETA needs to deal with it.

Wasteful, but it's just a damn sea bug.

When will PETA picket my house for my consistent smashing of mosquitos?

So, according to ALF we can eat aborted babies as long as we don't use a honey mustard dipping sauce.

Lobster is one thing I've definitely missed since moving inland. I used to regularly swap blackfish for "red guys" with lobster men on LI Sound. Also used to meet the boats in Gerritson Beach, B'klyn. to get my fix. This time of year my craving for blueclaws starts to awaken. Unfortunately, it will again go unsatisfied. Sigh

I've got a guy on my site selling fresh lobster. Since PETA is campaigning against lobsters...I may have to order some myself to support them!
