Doctors may soon have a prescription for health that even children will like: more playtime. European and international health experts say a new study makes the most convincing case yet for the benefits of children being active. They say the research may lead to new guidelines saying youngsters between ages 5 and 16 need to be active up to 1 1/2 hours a day.

Well, in all seriousness, this topic interests me. I'm the father of two sons, 19 months and 2 weeks. I grew up in a very active environment. But my parents didn't face the challenge that many parents now face - video games.

Atari came out and made a big splash, but by that time I was too involved in sports as a kid to let it take up too much time. Now things are different.

I cringe whenever I see a fat little kid. It's pathetic. Besides educating my boys as they grow, I must also ensure their attention to physical fitness. Why do so many parents neglect this? It's mind-boggling.

Congratulations on the new addition.

This topic interests me as well. I have no doubt that several million of our tax dollars were spent to make this important discovery, and I'm wondering how to get in on the action. I could have reached the same conclusion for as much as 10 percent less than this study cost.

There was a cool show called "connections" a while back. Bear with me while I make a few 'connections' here.

Liberals, namely FDR, have massively increased the tax burden on families. That tax burden has become so burdensome that moms have to go to work to keep the family at a comfortable standard of living (ok, we don't need mcmansions with 3 gar carages stuffed with suv's and boats, but...) so in order for mom to work we need day care and day care people don't necessarily have the kids best interests in mind, so they let kids play videos games ad nauseum, and feed them cheap high fat snacks to keep them shut up, so, in conclusion, liberals are responsible for kids poor health.

The article actually came from the Boston Globe, a site which according to copyright restrictions requires Free Republic articles from the Boston Globe to be posted, only if they are excerpted and linked.

In this case, instead of pulling your thread, I went ahead and added the source, link and then excerpted it for you.

There's truth to your theory, but at the same time I've read stories about how taking on another income and putting your kids in day care actually may cost you more in the long run financially. Couples would be better off with one parent staying home once you really factor-in all the expenses.

Of course this also would include the ancillary benefits of having an actual parent raising their own child.

I like the kinder gentler mod posts of late, with explanations, etc. Nicely done.

Sounds like my childhood. I slept outside in the woods more than more own bed during the summers. The biggest risk was an occasional tick to remove. I wish it were the same these days.

I do not disagree one bit! One must chose a wife (or husband) willing to make that sacrifice. That's not always easy.
