Vicious court battle rocks the world of Manhattan's one-time society queenBY HELEN PETERSON
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Society queen Brooke Astor is living a twilight hell because of son Anthony Marshall, court papers say.
According to court papers, Brooke Astor, 104, lives in wretched conditions in this Park Ave. building.
Brooke Astor, the patron saint of philanthropy and society in New York, is being forced to live her remaining days in wretched, uncharitable conditions, according to court papers filed by her grandson.
Astor, now 104, is allegedly being kept inside her dilapidated Park Ave. duplex by her only child, Anthony Marshall - who controls her $45 million fortune, yet refuses to spend money for her care.
The stunning blue blood family feud emerged from court documents obtained exclusively by the Daily News.
According to court papers, Marshall:
Cut back on everything from her doctor visits to the brand of makeup she uses.
Won't give Astor a hospital bed fitted with rails, even though she has fallen from her bed.
Ordered her aides to not buy certain medicine at the drugstore because a weaker version is available for less on the Internet.
Wouldn't allow nurses to buy his mother a new outfit for her 104th birthday.

Do you think this guy Anthony Marshall is following the Michael Schiavo 'how to use the law to wack a family member' script?
It's hard to tell these two guys apart!

I'm glad you posted someone else's article on this subject. Cindy Adams always writes with that nauseating "The Rich Are Better!" sneer that makes me reject whatever she has to say.
As for the story, if such a famous woman has to suffer people like this, imagine those who don't have $45 mil.

Mrs. Astor's son-of-the-rich is doing his best to spend as little as possible on the care of his mother.

My problem is that 99% of the time "good parents" would never get a son like this. Unless he is the 1% directly claimed by the anti-christ, there's probably a reason he is such a loser....and I would suspect it has to do with parenting. Looks like a case of reaping the whirlwind (although, this is pure conjecture) to me
. Not that I condone his actions and don't think he shouldn't be slowly totured......

Cindy Adams' wordcraft is very appropriate. I couldn't agree with her more.

I'm talking about her writing style in general, not her choice of words in this specific instance, though it, too, is keeping with her general style.

You know if the press lies about other stuff why would you not suspect the press is lying about this?

Do you suppose Anthony Marshall hired Michael Schiavo as a consultant?

No, there is a Phil Spector item further down in the column. His trial is starting.

Yep, that is definitely Phil Spector. Yucky looking man. He does resemble Imus, though.

. . .99% of the time "good parents" would never get a son like this. Unless he is the 1% directly claimed by the anti-christ, there's probably a reason he is such a loser....and I would suspect it has to do with parenting. Looks like a case of reaping the whirlwind. . .Maybe. But if you're suggesting that Brooke Astor was a bad mother and created a bad son, recall that this article says nothing about Marshall's father, who is also fifty percent of the equation. There's nothing about Brooke Astor's exemplary life to suggest that she was not a good mother, and it's an outrage to suggest that this is somehow her fault.
People make their own choices about morality no matter how well or badly they're raised.
Good parenting makes a difference, true. I know people who were raised in concentration camps, watching their loved ones getting machine-gunned by Nazis or Pol Pots guys, and they still grew up to be decent human beings; we all know people who were raised in loving homes who grew up to be car thieves and gang members.

One has to ask, if this son has exibited this lack of character for many years...
..why in the world didn't this woman make provisons with someone else....an uninvolved 3rd party ....someone who would oversee her finances in her later years.
Why leave these choices to the son??????...I don't get it.
