What is it about boomers that doesn't allow them to go out with the grace and humility of most of their predecessors? Even Tom Foley had enough sense to do that for crying out loud.

What the heck are you talking about? You make it sound like Newt retired and is ancient. He's not. He's still a reasonably young man, politics-wise. You want him in a monastery. His brain didn't stop working when he left Congress. If anything, Newt's brain works non-stop and overtime. The idea he would go out to pasture at his age is ludicrous.

I'm not talking about him going out to pasture, flaglady.

Decent people do not criticize others who are doing their jobs after they have left them. It's just ugly and makes a person seem small. Great men and women take on new challenges, find new work, seek new things to stay relevant and to make the world a better place. He could work on building a think tank, or find a cause that he wants to focus on. He could become an ambassador, or spokesman. There are a thousand things he could do that would be positive.

Instead, Newt is trying to stay relevant and build up his legacy by simply talking down the current administration. That is Carter/Clinton worthy behavior, and I had hoped that he would do better. He could provide context. He could be instructive rather than destructive.

But, imo, he took the low road, and that is a real disappointment.
