Gov. Romney Shuts Down Big Dig Tunnel
AP/My Way ^ | 07/20/06 | AP/My Way

BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Mitt Romney ordered an immediate shutdown of the Ted Williams Tunnel's eastbound lanes Thursday as the investigation continued into a deadly collapse of ceiling panels in a connecting tunnel.

No reasons for the closure were immediately released. The governor has been overseeing the inspections of the Big Dig tunnels since shortly after the fatal accident July 10 that killed Milena Del Valle, 38, as she and her husband drove to the airport.

The Ted Williams Tunnel was a key part of the city's massive Big Dig project and leads from Boston to Logan International Airport. The Interstate 90 tunnel where a woman was crushed by 12 tons of falling cement ceiling panels leads to the Ted Williams Tunnel.

"No reasons for the closure were immediately released."

You mean you need more of a reason than it collapsing and killing someone?

from CBS4News:

Eric Fehrnstrom, a spokesman for Romney said an initial assessment from the Turnpike Authority found no potential problems in the Ted Williams Tunnel that rose to the level of a public safety threat.

But Fehrnstrom said, "We've gone back and looked at those areas, and based on what we've seen Gov. Romney is overruling that assessment and shutting down the eastbound section."

more

"The tunnel has a different ceiling design which used lighter panels than the four, 3-ton panels that fell onto the car carrying Del Valle and her husband.

"The $14.6 billion Big Dig buried the old elevated Central Artery that used to slice through the city, replacing it with a series of tunnels. Although it's been considered an engineering marvel, the most expensive highway project in U.S. history also has also been plagued by leaks, falling debris, cost overruns, delays and problems linked to faulty construction."

Who's paying for all this...got a mirror? (I believe it's 80 per cent fed. funding for interstate highway-related?)

Oh, my. Now, no need to lose your head over this, Ted.

Any chance someone can go to the entrance of the tunnel,
remove the word "Williams" and substitute "Kennedy"?

My thoughts exactly!

Still more proof of the lack of functioning brain cells within the heads of those that work for the MSM.

Romney took the step of taking control of the situation, so now he's politically committed to finding a significant and widespread problem.

"The tunnels are safe"--Matt Amorello, the day after the accident. Surely if they're safe we can drive through them,
right, Fat Matt? I mean, there aren't any defective bolts;
or 2 ton ceiling panels that could fall on us

Have they tried to spin this as somehow being the fault of evil conservatives? Can it even be done?

Aargh!! Oh, please, the last thing I wanted to think about was Ted William's poor frozen cracked head!

"The operation was completed and Williams' head and body were preserved separately. The head is stored in a steel can filled with liquid nitrogen. It has been shaved, drilled with holes and accidentally cracked 10 times, the magazine said. Williams' body stands upright in a 9-foot tall cylindrical steel tank, also filled with liquid nitrogen."

Lieberals who brought us the Big Dig want the same people running national health care and investing for our retirement. Maybe there was a time in the past, before total sloth and corruption set in, when government could handle these types of projects - Hoover Dam, TVA, Manhattan project - but that time is gone.

>>the fault of evil conservatives?

Well, they point out our last 4 governors have been Republicans.

--Bill Weld (resigned in futile attempt to get Ambassadorship)
--Paul Cellucci (left to be ambassador to Canada, eh? Leaving us with the very competent and skillful...)
--Jane Swift ("I'm in a firing mood"--and hired Fat Matt)
--Mitt Romney (The dashing, clean-cut, Presidential contender to the rescue!!)
