A day in the life of President Bush (7/16/06): photos & news

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady are in Russia for the G8 summit, which will conclude tomorrow. In addition to attending the group sessions, President Bush held a series of bilateral meetings with key leaders, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and French President Jacques Chirac.

Significantly, the President also had a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao, which was characterized as "on the sidelines" of the G8 summit. (China is not a member of the G8.)

Here is a link to the White House transcript of their joint press conference held after their meeting.

Here is a link from the article in Kyodo News about bilateral U.S.-China summit.

Regarding the Middle East crisis, the G8 struggled to come to an agreement, but did issue a joint statement. Led by President Bush, who pointedly said that Israel has a right to defend herself, the statement by the G8 leaders said:

The recent crisis "results from efforts by extremist forces [Iran and Syria] to destabilise the region and to frustrate the aspirations of the Palestinian, Israeli and Lebanese people for democracy and peace."

Hezbollah and Hamas, though not named, were ordered to "immediately halt their attacks" to avoid plunging Middle East into "chaos" and provoking a wider conflict.

Israel's right to defend itself was confirmed by the G8 leaders, but they asked Israel to be "mindful of the strategic and humanitarian consequences of its actions."

In other words, the G8 statement closely parallel's President Bush's position. British Prime Minister Tony Blair also said Israel has a right to defend herself, and he accused Iran and Syria of undermining efforts to build a lasting peace in the Middle East.

Here is a link to a transcript of the G8 leaders' complete statement.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Skimpy news today, primarily because the President's schedule has not been finalized for next week.

The President will campaign in Colorado for Republican congressional candidate Rick O'Donnell, who is seeking the seat of Rep. Bob Beauprez, who is running for governor. This open seat is the 7th Congressional District in suburban Denver.

The White House would not confirm the President's plans for next week after he returns from Russia. Ken Lisaius, a White House spokesman, said GWB's schedule for next Wednesday is still to be announced, and he has no public events scheduled for Thursday. The schedule could change, he said.

However, NAACP leaders said yesterday that they were optimistic President Bush would attend the organization's 97th annual convention next week in Washington.

"I am hopeful that he has decided to attend," said Bruce S. Gordon, president and chief executive officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "I cannot confirm that he will be there, but I'm optimistic."

Paul Brathwaite, the Congressional Black Caucus' communications director, who has spoken with leaders planning the meeting, said Bush is expected to speak at the conference Thursday.

Yes! It looked like she had weasel pelts sewn all over it! That was a really scary outfit!

Hello! Great pics--thanks!

The Dims are such hypocrits--I was listening to Biden this AM on the radio and could hardly made sense of his "wanderings" about N.Korea, nukes, etc. (although that could have been due to my brain being fried by the heat . . . naw, it was him :-) )

Anyway . . . interesting times we live in! Can anyone suggest a good map of the Middle East, specifically Israel, Lebanon, etc., with the major cities on it? I can't seem to type in the right words to get the kind of map I want. THANKS!

Hello!

The Pres. does seem to have a good relationship with Koizumi. God bless the Pres. for sticking up for Israel; I hope he continues to do so. I think he will.

naw, it was him

Yep, under the best of circumstances, Biden doesn't make any sense.

Re the map, try this link

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&country=IL&addtohistory=&city=

The map is interactive, so you can zoom in to get street-level detail if you wish. You can click on the star in the middle of the map to zoom in closer to that point, and/or you can use the zoom scale on the left. You can also use the directional arrows in the frame around the map to move north, south, east and west.

Me too, Maj. On the other hand think how wistfully we'll look back at these after they get divorced...(ha ha ha...sarcasm aimed at the tabloids!)

But when George and Laura divorce he and Condi can take their "affair" public and we'll have those pictures . . . (more sarcasm at the dolts!)

RE: The Pres. driving his own golf cart . . . someone said he was one of the only leaders who didn't have someone else drive.

I gave my precious little Sara to her new owner on Wednesday. I know it's a superb home, but I was closest to Sara than the other kittens, so it was hard to let her go. But they asked specifically for her, and I couldn't keep all three kittens. (I really shouldn't keep any, but can't turn them over to just anyone.) I just hope she'll be happy and loved. I know she will and yet there's always that nagging doubt that no one could love them as much as I do. Sigh.

The other two are doing great. Funny, curious, obnoxious [grin], playful.

Thanks for the link! I just couldn't seem to get the right "search" words to get what I wanted.

I haven't heard Jordan mentioned; what is their role/potential role in all of this?

I wish I had saved that picture!

Scary, indeed! It reminded me of the fox stole that my old maiden aunt used to wear to church...........the kind where the heads are still on and biting the tails.

Scared the living daylights out of me! LOL!

***I like the gypsy type skirts and if she had a brighter top on I think would look very nice.***

Is THAT what that is? LOL! What do *I* know? I don't get out much.

And I agree that it would look better with a bright top.
