The suspense and hype surrounding the initial public offering of Russian state-owned oil giant Rosneft -- now expected to take place next week -- has mounted as major oil companies British Petroleum (BP), China National Petroleum Corp., and Malaysia's Petronas have expressed a firm interest in participating. Reports say BP wants to buy a $1 billion stake in the company. The price for one share of Rosneft has risen to the upper end of the $5.85- $7.85 range. The company says it expects to raise well over $11 billion from the sale of up to 14.9 percent of its shares. Controversy surrounds the sale because Rosneft's remarkable growth has in part been achieved at the expense of Yukos, whose assets it seized in 2004 -- illegally, according to Yukos, which is calling for the share sale to be blocked.
