Small Pennsylvania city bans illegal immigrants
Wilkes-Barres Times Leader ^ | 7/13/06 | Associated Press

The City Council approved a law Thursday night designed to make this small city in northeastern Pennsylvania among the most hostile places in the U.S. for illegal immigrants to live or work. The 4-to-1 vote came after nearly two hours of passionate debate. Opponents argued it was divisive and possibly illegal, but supporters argued illegal immigrants' growing numbers have damaged the quality of life here.

"We must draw the line, and we are doing it tonight," Mayor Lou Barletta told a packed council chambers.

Barletta proposed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act last month as a response to what he said were Hazleton's problems with violent crime, crowded schools, hospital costs and the demand for services.

The ordinance would deny licenses to businesses that employ illegal immigrants, fine landlords $1,000 for each illegal immigrant discovered renting their properties, and require city documents to be in English only.

I must confess that it is pretty exhilirating to see an idea of mine and something that I wrote, get passed into law.

Unfortunately, a judge threw our initiative out on a ridiculous legal challenge. However, it lives on in Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

Now, other cities like Avon Park in Florida, Sandwich, Massachusetts and Escondido, California look to be following suit.

How far we have fallen. To have to have a law to declare illegal aliens illegal, to have to have a law which declares marriage to be between a man and a woman. To jail our own soldiers for defending themselves in battle..... the list goes on....

Total bull and totally unconstitutional. I'll rent to anyone I choose, without checking their passports. Here's to seeing this publicity stunt die a quick legal death.

What fantasyland do you live in where you think that you can rent to anyone you want?

Are you suggesting that any and all limits on who and how many people you can rent to is unconstitutional?

We should all be happy to incur these costs if it means some libertarian slumlord can have a easier time renting his apartment.

Just curious. What do you find unconstitutional about this and are you referring to the Federal Constitution or the State Constitution?

The Chief Judge for the U.S. Discrit Court (East) is James T. Giles, a Carter Apointee, and for the West is Donetta W. Ambrose, a Clintoon apointee, so a court challenge probably would work.

Whoo Hoo!!!!! Way to go. It's about time people took matters into their own hands. Now if we could only get rid of activist judges and take back our country. I'd like to see THEM declared unConstitutional.

I'm not sure that this fits your ping lists but it sure is interesting.

Typical illegal booster, standing tall for the constitution and freedom as long as it puts $$$ in their pocket. Never mind if someone else has to pay.
