That's an ugly illness.

That's also an ugly headline. What does the All-Star Game have to do with the mayor getting cancer?

I don't know, but just in case, I'm going to skip watching the game this year. /sarc

as if it's much better to be diagnosed with cancer after seeing Joe Mauer hit a home run.

It is a poignant, not ugly, headline for those who know the facts. The All-Star game is being held in Pittsburgh, and the struggling city and its mayor hope it will be a chance to showcase the city and perhaps boost economic development (a view found in most host cities that have bid for the game.) The game has surely taken much of his time and effort, being one of the most important matter on his agenda for months as a rare opportunity to try and swing deals with the huge gathering of corporate executives. So rather than being able to relax after months of preparation, enjoy the limelight, and perhaps seal deals to bring in jobs, he's instead entering a hospital to fight for his life. Very sad irony to the timing.
