Sabotage potential
Washington Times ^ | 7-10-06 | Bill Gertz and Rowan Scarborough

We have no evidence that the U.S. was able to sabotage North Korea's Taepodong-2 missile, which malfunctioned 42 seconds into launch on Tuesday and crashed. But we do note that special operations forces (SOF) are playing an increasing role, overt and covert, in the world under Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's rule. We also note that one of the reasons that SOF procured the powerful .50- caliber Barrett's sniper rifle was to have the capability to disable ballistic missiles. It's a scenario for missile defense you won't see in any literature from the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency: insert a commando behind the lines, who positions himself within shooting range of the launchpad. "One of the original reasons for procuring the .50-caliber sniper system was to disable missiles," a SOF source says. "A round pumped in prior to launch, or during to cover the noise, in the right place would cause a catastrophic malfunction."

And it was just the thing that came to mind when I heard about the missile exploding shortly after launch.

This ought to be good enough to get a few North Korean rocket scientists executed.

A .50-caliber sniper rifle. Let's hope OBL becomes the first human target. Now that will leave a mark.

You guys ever been around a launch pad and seen the security there? I have. I am sure the Norks would have the place buttoned up. This sounds pretty unlikely to me. Debka grade speculation. Inserting and extracting a shooter (team?) into Norkland would not be easy. Not to mention this kind of speculation is what feeds the gun grabbers here in the US who want to make the .50 illegal.

Well, that's what the Barrett was built for...as much for disabling light vehicles and machinery as for people. I mean, c'mon, a high-velocity .50 BMG round is a bit much to use on a person.

Really really fun, granted, but still a bit much.

I hope this is NOT true - as one of my grandson's is airborne SOF - and the disclosure of this puts an additional target on his back.

If this IS true = then WT is competing with the NYSlimes for the top prize for Treason...

This is sooooo unlikely..... There are much easier weapons to field that would disable a rocket. This is a ridiculous scenario.

Agreed. While it's neat to read about things like this, we really don't NEED TO KNOW.

My suspicious nature suspects that is more likely.

Oh thank you so much for the info Waste Pro. I could not have survived today , tomorrow or the future without knowing this info. Ditto same on call and bank monitoring. Really, Had I not known about all this info my life would have ended and I would not have been writing this post.

However, as a terrorist or foreign agent the info was invaluable and I am sending the fist six heads I cut off to you attention and for thanks.

"We have no evidence" - pure bs and speculation. Yes a trained operator could damage a lot of kinds of hardware with a Barrett or other .50 rifle. Does it make any sense (given the range of tools with which have to apply to solving this problem) to use a sniper to ruin the Norks launch? No. Option 1) this is filler (slow news day at the Washington Times?) or option 2) deliberate misinformation.

North Korea Thwarts US Attack

The government of Kim Jong-Il announced that America's attempted July 4 attack on his country was thwarted when "the supreme mental energy of Kim caused all of the American rockets to explode just hundreds of feet in the
air over their launching pads in cities all across the United States."

The statement went on to say that "as a show of mercy, Kim's psychic powers also caused all of the Nodong and Scud missiles in North Korea's planned retaliatory strike to crash harmlessly into the sea, sparing the Americans
from their justly deserved punishment."

The statement concluded that "Kim's power, wisdom and mercy are unbounded, marking him as the progenitor of a new race of superhumans."

Far from first. They were used & worn out by the hundreds in the first Iraq war, among other uses.
