I think it is very likely that the military preferred that the information there were unsecured chemical shells still loose in Iraq was supressed, to lessen the likelihood that the "insurgents" would try to locate and use them in IED-style booby-traps.

First, W fools Saddam into stashing his WMD so that he couldn't use them then on our troops and then he fools the insurgents into believing that there were indeed no WMD in Iraq for them to find and use on our troops.
