Hawking's question: "In a world that is in chaos politically, socially and environmentally, how can the human race sustain another 100 years?"

This question presumes everyone defines political, social and environmental chaos in the same manner.

The question is: Is the world in any more political, social and environmental chaos than in the past?

Yes, interesting.
There have ALWAYS been wars, famine, revolutions and turmoil; but 200 years ago who would know about Darfur or 'global warming' and events such as those in the former Yugoslavia would appear in a paper months afterward. IMHO the world is more chaotic now because there are more people.

Well done...you have fingered the fallaciousness of the Doc. Hawkings' premise.

#1 There is no Earth government and not every government on Earth is in political chaos.

#2 There is no Earth society and not ever society on Earth is in chaos.

#3 The Earth's environment is as good a definition of chaos as we have, always has been...not a good question.

So Doc Hawkings, from your mathematical and Physics background and your complete lack of education in the areas of sociology and political science, combined with your irrelevant observations about global warning, I guess it all comes down to this...a big bang leading to a black hole.

No. But a nutcase with a bow and arrow - or a submachine gun, it's waaaaaaay different than a nutcase with a hundred nukes and 20 different virus cocktails - smallpox mixed with the common cold -- AIDS mixed with streptococcus -- etc.

Bad people can do a lot more damage than before, with less money and -- faster.

Nature (the "environment") itself is chaos...

'In all the cosmos there is chaos. In all chaos there is order, but a secret order.' (Carl Jung)
