The guy can't be very bright, if that's his question. In the history of life on this planet, species die from too few, not too many members. Large populations always spawn, what some might call "chaos". I reject the premise of the question.

Often animal populations explode before they catastrophically die off (after consuming all their sustenance). That is a natural fact.

The species which spawned Stephen is likely to continue killing and maiming itself for the next 100 years, or until some faction such as Islam gets the means to wipe out the 'infidels' to which Hawking belongs, but even that will be unlikely to destroy all the human species. It is more likely that mass extinction will come at the hands of an extraterrestrial thumper rock than self inflicted. Either way, Stephen's notions regarding 'seeding' the solar system and then the galaxy with humans is a good topic for contemplation and perhaps planned action. The dialog must be opened and hashed, so his recent efforts are a great start ... humans should have started this discussion in earnest in 1945, to be developing now means to divert killer space rocks in 2006. We're running our usual behindness into appropriations debates ...
