Remove Islam from the planet.

Short, and to the point.

So if we DID expand into Space, which would the Muzzies resemble more...Romulans or Klingons? Borg? Species 8472?

The potential for mass death is as great now as it was at any other time. The only difference is that we are more aware of the cause.

I don't disagree with you that the world wars and black death were monumental in history, but we can easily find ourselves faced with the same calamity via ebola, bird flu, asteroid impact, WMD terrorist, etc. You just looking at the calamities from hindsight, whereas I'm looking at them from potential. But either way, mankind has survived and will do so again, regardless of the doomsday prophets.

Hawking's question: "In a world that is in chaos politically, socially and environmentally, how can the human race sustain another 100 years?"

We in the USA can insist that the principles embodied in our Constitution be used as a basis on how we are to be treated by the world; -- and we can pledge that we, in turn, will treat everyone else on that same basis.

EBOLA

Ebola virus is also one of the rarest viral infections in humans. Despite the tremendous attention it has received in recent years, of all the pathogens that have plagued mankind throughout history, Ebola virus is little more than a bit player. It has sustained but nine major outbreaks since it was first recognized some 25 years ago, claiming at most a few hundred lives each time. By comparison, five times as many people die in workplace accidents in the United States each year than all those who have ever died of Ebola hemorrhagic fever.

BIRD FLU

Up to 29 May 2006, there have been 224 confirmed cases in humans in Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, Djibouti, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

127 People have died.

HIV

More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.

Africa has 12 million AIDS orphans.

By the end of 2005, women accounted for 48% of all adults living with HIV worldwide, and for 59% in sub-Saharan Africa.

Young people (15-24 years old) account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide - around 6,000 become infected with HIV every day.

No matter how unpleasent the real facts are - it is best if we strive for accuracy.

I'll bet Hawking could care less about reification, but you do have to hand it to the guy...he's thinking about things on a level we could never understand.

This thread reminds me of the famous Thucydides quote:

"Any nation that draws too great a distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards, and its fighting done by fools."

"Sounds like youre just dying to make the case for giving the southwest back to Mexico."

Oooooohhh!!!!

Can you also give me the numbers for the Florida lotto this week?

Why don't you simply address what I said, instead than trying to pick a fight over something I didn't?
