The Face of the Shutdown (NJ Government Shutdown)
New York Times Terrorist Tip Sheet ^ | 7/4/06 | DAVID W. CHEN

Posted on 07/03/2006 11:09:33 PM PDT by conservative in nyc

When Gov. Jon S. Corzine looks back at the Budget Crisis of '06 and begins to ponder re-election, he may be able to say that his tough-medicine plan to increase the sales tax was the right way to turn around the state's troubled finances.

But as New Jersey braced for the fourth day of a government shutdown ordered on Saturday by Mr. Corzine — at a cost of several million dollars a day to the state coffers — he is the person residents seem to be holding responsible for the loss of services.

Some have been heard to grumble that Mr. Corzine, a former co-chairman of Goldman Sachs whose personal wealth has been estimated at several hundred million dollars, can afford a tax increase and a government shutdown, an interesting conundrum for the governor who is considered a liberal Democrat and a bit of a populist.

Can't get that driver's license renewed or play the lottery? Angry about the possibility that Atlantic City's casinos will close on Wednesday morning? Or worried about being able to put food on the table if you are a state worker who has been furloughed?

Who else are people going to blame, at some point, but the governor?

--Snip--

"Most voters associate their governor directly with the good things and the bad things that happen to their state government, so it's impossible for him to escape the public's judgment, whether it's praise or wrath," said Larry J. Sabato, the director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "And in this case it could easily turn into wrath. Sure, he says he's standing up for principle, which makes him a profile in courage. But virtually everybody in J.F.K.'s book lost his next election."

Funny, I don't remember the Times projecting that the public would blame the only nationwide elected official involved with the 1995 federal government shutdown, President Clinton, whether that was fair or not.

As a resident of New York, I can sit back and watch the Democrats fight each other over which taxes to raise across the Hudson, as the governor makes the idiotic decision to close things that actually generate revenue for Jersey. Talk about a win-win situation for Garden State Republicans!

The problem is New Jersey Republicans are just as corrupt and even more liberal than the Democrats. There are conservatives in New Jersey but there are few of them to present a viable alternative to the liberal kaistocracy in the Garden State.

Hilarious. For a government Leftist enamored of bloated budgets, the "tough-medicine" plan would be to cut spending. As a matter of fact, increasing taxes is just ho-hum business as usual, with big yawns all around.

The voters must be stupid, if they will vote for a governor, who is willing to shut down the state, to get a tax increase.

That's the only thing Dems know how to do: tax and spend.

Man, they're even dumber then that. The other side of this fight is the DIMs in the legislature.

They aren't fighting against a tax increase.

They just want to raise different taxes.

It's like the Iran-Iraq War. you don't want anyone to win, and you want them both to take a beating. I hope this goes on all summer.

The beauty of this country is that everyone has the right to move about freely, so, the most logical solution to a situation like this is to exercise that option and MOVE.

I believe the voters knew full well, or should have, what they were getting when they put a liberal in control of their lives and now they should just accept the consequences and quietly wait for another chance at election time. Unfortunately, they have a tract record of stupidity at the polls, so the odds of changing their lives and fortune are nil.

From Citizens Against Government Waste:

---------------------------------------------------------------

Stop a Tax Increase in New Jersey!

Tell your state senator and assemblymembers to reject the tax increases contained in Governor Jon Corzine’s budget.

Governor Corzine is proposing to boost the New Jersey sales tax from 6 to 7 percent, making it the most expensive on the East Coast. The governor is also proposing to increase the cigarette excise tax by 35 cents to $2.75 per pack, which would be the highest in the country. Further, he would hike excise taxes on alcoholic beverages (beer by more than 40 percent; wine by more than 14 percent; and liquor by almost 2.5 percent). As if that’s not enough, the governor is also proposing a surcharge on new luxury car registrations. While Governor Corzine is claiming that New Jersey residents must shoulder a heavier tax burden to eliminate the state budget deficit, his budget would actually increase spending by $2.6 billion!

Since 2002, New Jersey has enacted $8.7 billion in tax hikes, and the average taxpayer is paying $924 more in annual state taxes than in 2001 -- more than five times the national average. Over that same period, the state budget has grown by approximately $5 billion. Last year, New Jersey’s budget was $4.5 billion higher than neighboring Pennsylvania, although Pennsylvania has 3.7 million more residents.

The real solution to New Jersey’s budget shortfall is clear: Reduce spending; do not raise taxes.

Apparently you are mistaken about the nature of this shutdown. What is really going on here is a pissing match between 2 parts of the Democratic party machine, and their civil service union bosses.

The Union bosses sent mock "pink slips" to the legislature telling them that they would be out of a job if they asked for cuts from the unions. On a normal day this would be no bid deal, they are all bought and paid for after all, but the legislature didn't like being told they were lapdogs in so plain a fashion. Now Corzine (also a union stooge who owes his job to their efforts) is trying to find a way to broker the peace.

But the last thing that will happen in this state is the civil servants starting the revolution...if anything they are already our civil masters. They take what they like, and we (the taxpayers) must pay it without any consideration.

After all... all of this talk of a sales tax increase is just so it can be giving back in the form of property tax relief. Got that?... they will increase the sales tax 1% to lower the property taxes something less than 1%. sounds like a deal to me.

and in the meantime the unions get continue to feed on the fatted calf. Hard to believe this was a free country once.

Can't get that driver's license renewed or play the lottery? Angry about the possibility that Atlantic City's casinos will close on Wednesday morning? Or worried about being able to put food on the table if you are a state worker who has been furloughed?

Who wants to go to the MVC (formerly the DMV)? If you can't get a renewal, you can't get a ticket for failing to renew, either. Frankly this is a big plus, in my book!

And if I don't play the lottery this week, that's less money I throw down that rat-hole. Frankly I'm better off for that, as well.

And as for Atlantic City, who gambles on a Wednesday? Maybe if the die-hard degenerate gamblers take a few days off they'll take a walk in the sunshine and breathe some fresh air. The change will do them good.

As for the state workers, they're getting a paid holiday. And they will be paid, you know...

So far, this shut-down has been nothing but good for everybody involved. Maybe people will finally figure out that we don't really need the Government of New Jersey to be doing nearly as much as it has been doing. And once people realize that, maybe they'll figure out there is no reason we should be paying all those taxes.

Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

They are proposing to raise the sales tax by 16.7%, not 1%.

And somehow, when they take money from one of my pockets to put it in another of my pockets, most of it gets lost along the way...

We will lose 3.5 million a day just in lost revenue from the lottery and casinos, not to mention the loss of private income from the citizens who are now out of work (casino workers, small businesses.0

OK I admit it, I stated it poorly. I meant raising the sales tax from 6% on all purchases to 7% on all purchases, but you got my meaning.
And yes, I agree, most of the money will be 'lost' along the way, but at least the unions will still get record level salaries and benefits for doing as little government work as possible.

It's time for President Bush to declare a state of emergency in New Jersey, evacuating all federal assets and using helicopters to pick up productive citizens, first priority will be given to FReepers and their families in the garden state.

That's because "property tax relief" is a codeword for more direct aid to schools while the districts hire new teachers and assorted educrats while property taxes remain the same. The NEA loves the idea. That should be a clue as to why taxpayers should loathe it.
