According to the Spanish press, it was going too fast and one of the wheels broke. Initially, they said the roof of the tunnel collapsed, but that appears to have been an error.

All the same, it's a sad day for the people on the train and the families of the dead.

Valencia metro crash kills 34

Mon Jul 3, 2006 3:37 PM BST

By Ana Perez

VALENCIA, Spain (Reuters) - At least 34 people were killed and more than 20 seriously injured when a speeding underground train ran off the tracks and overturned in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia on Monday, officials said.

Two train carriages overturned in the tunnel just before entering the Jesus Metro station, apparently after a wheel broke on a curve, officials said. About 150 people were evacuated from the station platform.

Officials ruled out a terror attack in a country still shaky from train bombings by Islamist militants that killed 191 people in Madrid in 2004.

The accident took place days before Pope Benedict was due to visit Valencia for the World Meeting of Families and pilgrims are already arriving in the Mediterranean seaside city.

"It seems this unfortunate accident was caused by excess speed and a wheel breaking just before it entered the station," government official Luis Felipe Martinez told Spanish radio, adding that the number of dead was still not confirmed.

A senior police officer at the scene said 34 people had been killed.

Police sealed off streets outside the station and crowds watched under bright blue skies as emergency crews rushed injured people into ranks of ambulances.

One woman, her face blackened by what looked like soot, grimaced with pain as she walked with her arm around a police officer.

Emergency services set up two field hospitals in tents on the street and a judge arrived to supervise the removal of bodies. Hospitals appealed for blood donors.

The Pope has been informed of the accident and went to his private chapel to pray for the victims, Spanish state radio reported.

The mayoress of Valencia Rita Barbera told reporters the accident was "a catastrophe, a tragedy".

My guess is that some Islama-Nazi group will take credit, even if just an accident, because the site and smell of all that freshly spilled blood...well, it just excites Islama-Nazis to a point that in a frenzied delirium they must believe they did it.

If it was "just entering the station" just how fast was it going? Sounds like bull to me.

Someone can tamper with the breaks and see that it "goes too fast".

Sabotage was even used on US soil by the enemy in WWII.

Once again more stupid comments from posters who could care less about human life. Why do the mods let these people ruin threads? It is almost a guarantee in EACH AND EVERY thread anymore. People need to keep their stupid comments to themselves. Real people died. Sometimes I wish some of these posters could experience a little bit of tragedy in their lives.

Stop ruining threads.

We will have to see what the cause was - they were certainly quick to release conjecture.

On the other hand working with the dead and injured in the underground in these temperatures is a grizzly task. Prayers for family and emergency workers.

Casualty toll has been increased.

Another 47 people were injured, two of them critically, Reuters quoted officials as saying.

Similar casualty figures were reported by The Associated Press."

"A 21-year-old student, Cesar Hernandez, said the train was traveling faster than usual and shook violently before it braked suddenly and derailed."

SO WHO WAS DRIVING THE TRAIN ?!?

People died, idiot. Not everything that happens is a result of islamic terrorism, Zapatero or his (stupid) decision to withdrawl from Iraq.

People need to keep their stupid comments to themselves. Real people died.
But gee it's so much fun to make jokes about the Spanish or laugh at the "frogs" or any other knee-jerk (usually not funny) retarded comment that pops into one's head when there's an accident and you want to look like you're really unforgving and hard on the USA's "enemies" and also be the first armchair terrorism expert to suggest "terrorism" as the cause.
P.S. I agree with you! I posted to this thread about the same thing.
