Mary, Mary ... How Does Your Garden Grow?

Your back yard’s grown some weeds of late,
I know that you’ve been busy.
The changes you have seen in life,
Are sure to make one dizzy.

The gardens that you tended,
Have borne some bitter fruit,
The noble offspring of your loins,
Now lost in life’s pursuit.

He would have made you proud, I know,
And honored you all your days,
He did have other tasks to do,
And went in other ways.

He had a lot of friends, they say,
He spoke with calm assurance.
They followed, almost everywhere,
He had the most endurance.

His Father’s work appealed more than,
The grace found in your garden,
He followed that to its highest point,
He need not ask your pardon.

We all have some weeds to deal with,
To glorify that which remains,
The graceful peace of a garden,
Is worth what it costs in your pains.

Youth

To lay among the flowers,
To smell the fresh clean air.
To have no doubts or worries,
To live without a care.
We had that in our young days,
Before we grew up fast.
We need it more than ever,
But can’t live in the past.
So I propose a simple task,
To make us all feel great.
Get out there on the back roads,
Pull off the interstate.
Find a field and park the car,
Take off your shoes and run.
Sit beside a little stream,
Watch the clouds, it’s fun.
We can’t be kids but we can play,
And shed our cares and fears.
Thank the Lord for all you have,
Be glad for all the years.

The Flowers

Gardener's garters, Shepherd's purse,
Bachelor's buttons, Lady's smock,
And the Lady Hollyhock.
Fairy places, fairy things,
Fairy woods where the wild bee wings,
Tiny trees for tiny dames --
These must all be fairy names!

Tiny woods below whose boughs
Shady fairies weave a house;
Tiny tree-tops, rose or thyme,
Where the braver fairies climb!

Fair are grown-up people's trees,
But the fairest woods are these;
Where, if I were not so tall,
I should live for good and all.

Flowers From The Garden

There is a window in your heart, that opens on a garden,
A place you can retreat to when you need to ask for pardon,
For having been abusive, to the child that lives in you,
By simply asking way too much, for any child to do.

Don’t ask for the surrender, of childhood dreams so gay,
That they could always bring a smile, despite a rainy day.
The toys we had as children, were of the simplest sort,
A cardboard tube became a sword, a cardboard box a fort.

Children can be happy, they’ve learned the art of play,
Try not to lose that talent as you go about your day.
With all the noise and bustle that distracts you from that art,
Take time to smell the flowers from the garden in your heart.

Daisies

Daisies are the friendliest flowers
That grow beneath the sky.
They nod and wave for endless hours
To every passer-by.

When on the hills in early spring
Their happy faces smile
In answering to their beckoning
I'd journey for a mile.

I put them in my crystal vase
With baby's breath and rose,
And they assume a stately grace
As any flower that blows.

They laugh and whisper through the days,
When night comes on apace,
I seem to see in star-bouquets

Artichoke & Red Pepper Pizza
6 servings
Ingredients

1 (10 oz.) can refrigerated pizza crust dough
1 tbsp. olive oil
1 tsp. dried basil
5 garlic cloves, minced
1 (2 1/2 oz.) jar sliced mushrooms, drained
Cracked Pepper (optional)
Cooking Spray
1 (7 oz.) jar roasted red bell peppers, drained and julienne cut
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 (14 oz.) can artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped
1 1/2 cups (6 oz.) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 425°.

Unroll pizza crust dough onto a baking sheet coated with cooking spray, and pat dough into a 14 x 10 inch rectangle. Bake at 425° for 5 minutes, and set aside.

Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add bell peppers, basil, oregano and garlic; saute 3 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in artichokes and mushrooms. Sprinkle half of cheese over prepared pizza crust, leaving a 1/2 inch border. Spread vegetable mixture evenly over cheese; top with remaining cheese. Sprinkle with cracked pepper if desired. Bake at 425° for 10 minutes or until crust is lightly browned.
