Clinton did two things: he effectively ended the New Deal and and he unwittingly brought about a Republican majority that has lasted to this day. If any one else had been President, the changeover might have taken longer. But Clinton overreached on health care and his inability to sustain a genuine following led the floor to collapse underneath the Democrats in the first mid-term election of the 1990s. I don't really understand what liberals find fascinating about him. He was a political disaster for the Democratic Party and I can't name one Democrat he personally endorsed who went on to win public office. In a sane world, he would have been forgotten and the Democrats would have put him out of sight and out of mind as they did for a long time with the only other Democratic President of the late 20th century, Jimmy Carter.

I can't name one Democrat he personally endorsed who went on to win public office. I can name Richardson, Rahm Emmanuel, and Hillary to start with. And I wouldn't sniff at the power that media figures like Stephanopolous have.
There are others, and I wouldn't underestimate their power.
