The Dems would LOVE for Free Republic to become a subscription service.

In a word, no.
Free Republic permits the free exchange of ideas, and even the trolls and moles are good for verbal target practice. Besides, it is fun to peel their 'arguments' apart.
Otherwise, we end up preaching to the choir.

I guess you missed this part
It's the free and independent thinking that makes FR the best on the web

Welcome to Free Republic!
Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

The owner will do with this site what he will.
You're not the owner, and somehow I don't think you've discussed your idea with him first.
To: Berlin_Freeper
This site is way easier to navigate than the new stuff out there. Try following a discussion on yahoo or whatever forum, here, all you have to do is hit view replies. It's not antiquated. But, you're new....
To: Berlin_Freeper
If it does, I'll drop it. I can post for free elsewhere.

Yeah right! And say goodbye to the people who make this message board a success. There are to many people who run free message boards for the free republic to be able to charge people.

OK, so now you are not only paranoid (see his webpage anyone with questions), a basher of divorced fathers (your contribution to a recent thread), but a (de facto) tax advocate...
Remind us again why you want to post here????

I found FreeRepublic a few months ago when I was searching for the Iraq prewar documents. I wound up finding 'jveritas' and his translations and made friends with him. I went on to present the translated documents to Tom DeLay at dinner with just him, me, his wife, and my sister.
Had FreeRepublic been a subscription site none of the above would have occurred.

Gotta disagree. I understand your sentiments - but the best way to keep disruptors in check is simply to pounce quickly. I'm here now, and I donate - but if I had been forced to do that up front, I probably wouldn't have joined.

News is all over the internet.
Posting to a posted article is a way of expressing ones self, whether about the article, the pro / con of the author of the piece, or the response from another Freeper.
Should Free Republic begin to charge for that pleasure, and they have every right to, there will certainly be some big changes.
Personally, I doubt that I will see them.

A bad idea, IMHO, and features not implemented as youd prefer (e.g. keywords) are not antiquated on that basis.

Absolutely not.
We have many excellent members who might not be able to pay, or may not wish to... why would you want to lose them. I can contribute, and I do.
